A very rare memoir of suffragist and American minister Olympia Brown (1835-1926). Brown was the first woman to be ordained as clergy with the consent of her denomination. Brown was also an articulate advocate for women's rights and one of the few first generation suffragists who were able to vote with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. She was an ardent abolitionist, claiming John Brown as among her heroes. She was deeply devoted to the enfranchisement of women of all races who eventually left Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton's National American Woman Suffrage Association because of white supremacist language and policies. Brown campaigned in the AERA alongside Francis Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglass, Lucy Stone, and Alice Paul. An incredibly important book on women's history in the United States.

Clara Bewick Colby (1846 Ð 1916) was the longtime president of the Nebraska Woman Suffrage Association and the founder of the WomanÕs Tribune, the leading American suffrage publication and the official organ of the National Woman Suffrage Association. She was also a poet, literary critic, lecturer, and the first woman to be offi…cially appointed as a war correspondent. As a writer, Colby contributed to The WomanÕs Bible (1895) and wrote articles for magazines including HarperÕs Bazaar and Arena. The present work makes particular note of ColbyÕs involvement with the Federal Suffrage Association and her work with Brown. First edition of Olympia BrownÕs biographical sketch of her colleague and personal friend. Brown served as the president of the Federal Suffrage Association when Colby worked with the organization during her later years. Olympia Brown (1835 Ð 1926) was the head of the Wisconsin Suffrage Association, the president of the Federal Suffrage Association between 1903 and 1920, and the first woman to be ordained in the Unitarian Church. She was also a charter member of the American Equal Rights Association. Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and other suffragists often called on Brown to lecture because of her strong speaking skills, and in just one summer Brown delivered over 300 speeches while on tour in Kansas. Unlike many suffragists of her generation, Brown was alive to vote after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment; her final suffrage march was at the 1920 Republican National convention, just two months before the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. Dora G. Ogle served as its business manager. The newspaper quickly became the voice of the white women's suffrage movement in Maryland, and regularly printed news and information from other suffrage organizations, becoming a motivational force by providing practical tips on how to organize and debate the suffrage amendment. The publication started by advocating broadly for women's suffrage, but eventually aligned with the National Woman's Party to push for a direct federal constitutional amendment. Statewide Reach: It included contributions from local suffrage leaders across the state, such as Howard County's Laura L. Byrne. The Just Government League also opened a coffee room and restaurant in Washington, D.C. near the headquarters of Alice Paul's Congressional Union for Woman Suffrage. When the Nineteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution was ratified in 1920, the Maryland Suffrage News ceased publication. ; These are the copies received by Mrs. R E. Root (Mary Keziah Batcheller-Root,1880-1965), 29 Madison St., Annapolis, Maryland, whose subscription began in March of 1915. She was the wife of Dr. Ralph Eugene Root (1881-1960), a prominent American mathematician and educator. He served as a Professor of Mathematics and Mechanics in the Postgraduate School at the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. ; "It was on December 28, 1904, at Storm Lake, this state, that Dr. Ralph Eugene Root was united in marriage to Mary K. Batcheller, who was born in Portland tonwship, this county, daughter of Alexander F. and Mary C. (Ballou) Batcheller, prominent residents of that community, whose last days were spent at Council Bluffs. [. . .] Mary K. Batcheller received her schooling in the high school at Hawarden, in the high school at Larabee and at the Iowa State Normal at Cedar Falls, after which for six years she taught school in and around Akron and was thus engaged at the time of her marriage to Doctor Root. To that union four children have been born, Olive, Lloyd, Charlotte and Ellis. Signed by Olympia Brown with an extensive inscription in her hand on front free endpaper describing the circumstances that lead to the publication of the current work: "In 1911 the legislature of Wis[consin] submitted the Woman's Suffrage Amendment to the voters. I telegraphed Mrs. [Emma] DeVoe to c…ome and conduct the campaign. She came but circumstances prevented her from remaining. While there she suggested the preparation of these sketches as being more valuable for the purpose of sale to aid our treasury than a cookbook. Accordingly the sketches were hastily thrown together & with all their incompleteness ever given to the association as a slight help in paying the bills of the campaign." Additionally signed on following page with author's address. 115, [1] pp. with author portrait frontispiece facing title and seven other full page plates. Bound in publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to front board. Near Fine, light foxing to edges and prelims. An attractive copy. A major figure in the women's suffrage movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries, Olympia Brown (1835-1926) was a Unitarian Universalist minister, the first woman to be ordained as clergy with the consent of her denomination. A very rare signature on her self-published memoir.
