Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is a recording of the ordination service and installation of the Reverend Phebe Ann Hanaford as a minister within the Universalist denomination of Christianity. Her ordination marked an important milestone for the church as she was one of the earliest women to enter the ministry. The service includes acts of laying on of hands from other ministers and a sermon preached by Reverend John G. Adams, reflecting on the importance of seeing God as the father of all people and the inherent unity of humanity. The author reflects on the changing role of women in the church and society during this time, and the ways in which Reverend Hanaford's work and the work of other women like her contributed to an expanded view of humanity. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. A very rare memoir of suffragist and American minister Olympia Brown (1835-1926). Brown was the first woman to be ordained as clergy with the consent of her denomination. Brown was also an articulate advocate for women's rights and one of the few first generation suffragists who were able to vote with the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment. She was an ardent abolitionist, claiming John Brown as among her heroes. She was deeply devoted to the enfranchisement of women of all races who eventually left Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton's National American Woman Suffrage Association because of white supremacist language and policies. Brown campaigned in the AERA alongside Francis Ellen Watkins Harper, Frederick Douglass, Lucy Stone, and Alice Paul. An incredibly important book on women's history in the United States. …

Clara Bewick Colby (1846 Ð 1916) was the longtime president of the Nebraska Woman Suffrage Association and the founder of the WomanÕs Tribune, the leading American suffrage publication and the official organ of the National Woman Suffrage Association. She was also a poet, literary critic, lecturer, and the first woman to be officially appointed as a war correspondent. As a writer, Colby contributed to The WomanÕs Bible (1895) and wrote articles for magazines including HarperÕs Bazaar and Arena. The present work makes particular note of ColbyÕs involvement with the Federal Suffrage Association and her work with Brown. Octavp/ 116 pp. With frontisportrait of Colby and title-page vignette map showing which areas in North America had achieved womenÕs suffrage. The present work includes ColbyÕs long-form poem, ÒThe Song of the PlainsÓ (pp. 19-29), and a bibliography of ColbyÕs writings (pp. 104-108). PublisherÕs blue cloth titled in gilt. Small spot of light toning to frontisportrait and title-page. Hinge cracking between pages 16 and 17; first gathering somewhat loose. A very good, bright copy. First edition of Olympia BrownÕs biographical sketch of her colleague and personal friend. Brown served as the president of the Federal Suffrage Association when Colby worked with the organization during her later years. Olympia Brown (1835 Ð 1926) was the head of the Wisconsin Suffrage Association, the president of the Federal Suffrage Association between 1903 and 1920, and the first woman to be ordained in the Unitarian Church. She was also a charter member of the American Equal Rights Association. Susan B. Anthony, Lucy Stone, and other suffragists often called on Brown to lecture because of her strong speaking skills, and in just one summer Brown delivered over 300 speeches while on tour in Kansas. Unlike many suffragists of her generation, Brown was alive to vote after the passage of the Nineteenth Amendment; her final suffrage march was at the 1920 Republican National convention, just two months before the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment.
