Hardcover. Hardcover, approximately 4x6 inches, original black blindstamped decorative cloth with stamped gilt decorative spine, 42 pp + 26 pp + 49 pp, illustrated with 2 plates; very good. Corners bumped, a bit shelf scuffed, a 2 inch area of 1/8th inch drop marks on rear board, a few approximately 1/4 inch nicks on spine. Internally, previous owner's signature dated 1850 (in pencil) , lower corner of a few leaves creeased, some moderate foxing, otherwise tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked; probably never really read. Three different supposedly true stories; "Spoiled Child" a didactic tale about the son of rich parents who eventually winds up an indebted alcoholic brute; "David Baldwin" concerns the son of a miller in Kings County (Brooklyn) , NY, who was corrupted by reading Voltaire, Thomas Paine, Edward Gibbon, David Hume, etc. , but returned to religion on his death bed; includes a testimony from his physician, Adrian Vanderveer, dated 1833 in Flatbush; "Widow" is another deathbed conversion, in which the widow of an unnamed general who died in 1817 and who had been turned from religion by reading "The Age of Reason", is convinced of the truth of the Bible and Christianity (with some interspersed anti-Catholicism) , and dies a believer. Condizione: Very good. Philadelphia edition of this immensely popular book of questions and answers based around the teachings of the Reformed Dutch Church. A SPECIMEN OF DIVINE TRUTHS was first published in Dutch in 1706, with the first in English appearing in 1765. The title was published in many places across the US; the present copy is quite a scarce edition, with no holdings located in OCLC. 12mo. 5.5'' x 3.25''. Original coarse cloth-backed pictorial boards. 72 pages, collated complete. Contemporary pencil inscription "Mary White Her Book / Bought in the year of our lord / one thousand eight hundred," repeated twice. Binding with edgewear, soil and staining; a bit of scuffing to front board. Leaves with light foxing, some soil. A solid copy.
