Tirage limité (N° 1448 de 100 exemplaires H.C. sur vélin teinté des papeteries de rives numérotés de 1348 à 1447). Notre exemplaire est enrichi de deux remarquables reliures d'art signées Laurent Peeters, maitre relieur belge (1878-1955), largement considéré comme l'un des plus grands maîtres relieurs flamands de la première moitié du XXe siècle, dont les créations magistrales sont aujourd'hui extrêmement convoitées par les bibliophiles avertis. Installé dans son propre atelier de reliure d'art, il s'est forgé une réputation d'excellence grâce à un savoir-faire technique irréprochable et un style unique, évoluant avec finesse de l'Art Nouveau vers un Art Déco robuste et typiquement flamand. Travaillant des matériaux nobles comme le maroquin, il excellait dans l'art de la dorure de précision et des mosaïques de cuir géométriques, conférant à chaque ouvrage une véritable dimension sculpturale. Son talent exceptionnel l'a amené à créer des pièces uniques pour une clientèle prestigieuse, comprenant la haute société, des ministres et le roi Albert Ier de Belgique. Auteur du célèbre manuel technique 'Handboek voor den Boekbinder' (1946), ce maître incontesté a laissé un héritage durable, faisant de ses reliures artistiques des objets de collection rares, recherchés et convoités par les amateurs et collectionneurs de belles reliures. / Publié pour la première fois en 1867, ce chef-d'oeuvre retrace la jeunesse, les voyages et les combats de Thyl Ulenspiegel, personnage légendaire transformé par Charles De Coster en héros de la lutte contre l'oppression espagnole. Samuel is shown in profile. Adolphe Samuel (Liège 1824 - Gent 1898) Belgian composer , became director of the conservatory at Ghent. He was a pupil of Fétis and stu…died with Mendelssohn in Leipzig. He was a fierce adherent of cosmopolitism in music and as such an opponent of the leading Flemish composer of that period, Peter Benoit. Samuel's nomination in Ghent met with severe opposition in Flanders. (Corbet, Muziek Encyclopedie). Nice portrait engraving, originally loosely inserted in the '' Annuaire de l'Académie royale de Belgique, année 1923'', was intended as an illustration to the biographical article on Samuel which appeared in the yearbook of 1922 but apparently the engraving was not ready in 1922.

Very fine copy of one of the major works of this Belgian etcher, considered one of the greatests of his generation . He was born in Ghent (Gent-Gand) Flanders in 1870 , where he died in 1945. His native city , with its many impressive mediaeval buildings , became a permanent source of inspiration for his virtuous engravings.
