THEATER FRASCATI IN AMSTERDAM "Nieuw Frascati", ets met aquatint vervaardigd in 1825 door Willem Hendrik Hoogkamer naar een tekening vanCornelis de Kruyff, uitgegeven door Frans Buffa & Zonen als deel van diens "Vues choisis d'Amsterdam et ses environs dessinées d'apres nature". Later (') met de hand gekleurd. Afm.: ca. 15,5 x 1…8 cm. Nadat in het gebouw aan de Nes in Amsterdam (onder meer) respectievelijk een leprozenhuis, logement De Stad Lion en gouddraadtrekkerij De Gouden Bal gevestigd waren, maakte koffiehuishouder Jacob Geijkem er in 1823 een ontspanningslokaal van onder de naam Frascati. Hier werd muziek gemaakt, men kon er dansen en er werden ook wel toneelstukjes opgevoerd. Tot 1879 was Theater Frascati een beroemde uitgaansgelegenheid (en vanaf 1980 opnieuw), bekend om zijn sfeervolle en luxueuze uitstraling, met prachtige decoraties en comfortabele zitplaatsen. De afmetingen waren dan ook indrukwekkend: de ontspanningszaal zou 33 bij 11,50 meter geweest zijn, en ruim 7 meter hoog. (In 1843 en 1846 werden er nog twee zalen bijgebouwd.) Zoals te zien op de ets/aquatint hingen in de grote zaal acht kronenluchters met gasverlichting. Langs de wanden waren spiegels aangebracht en men zat aan losse tafeltjes. Prijs: Euro 175,-.

We zien het Rokin in noordelijke richting met aan het einde de Beurs van Hendrik de Keyser (die 10 jaar na het verschijnen van deze ets zouden worden gesloopt). Met van links naar rechts: tussen de nrs. 84 en 82 de ingang van de Enge Kapelsteeg, de Nieuwezijds Kapel, er voor in het water de Haagse en Rotterdammer Veer, tussen 36 en 34 ingang Gapersteeg en in de verte achter de huizen de koepel van het Koninklijk Paleis. Op de voorgrond de Utrechtse steiger, met veerschuit. Prijs: Euro 225,-.

"Vue de Broek, in Waterland", lithograph after the design by Hendrik Greven (17871854) and published in Amsterdam as part of "Souvenirs de la Hollande" by Frans Buffa & Zonen in 1838. With original hand colouring. Size: (image) 15.8 × 22 cm (including caption: 19.5 × 22 cm). This view depicts the village of Broek in Waterland, w…hich in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries was praised by foreign travellers for its exceptional cleanliness and order. Numerous travel accounts describe the village as remarkably neat and meticulously maintained, even noting measures taken to prevent visitors from causing any form of pollution. At the centre of the composition lies the Havenrak, the calm stretch of water that runs through the village and reflects the surrounding buildings. The Reformed church rises with its slender tower, serving as a key landmark within the flat landscape of Waterland. The surrounding wooden houses, with their characteristic gabled façades, painted in soft green tones and set among carefully trimmed trees and white-painted fences, reinforce the image of harmony and bourgeois prosperity. "Tentjagt. Retour de la Promenade à Zaandam", [Tent yacht. Returning from an excursion to Zaandam].lithograph made by Hendrik Greven, published in Amsterdam as part of "Souvenirs de la Hollandeby Frans Buffa & Zonen in 1838. With original hand colouring. Size: (image) 15.8" × 19.9 cm (including text: 19.9 × 19.9 cm). The print d…epicts a so-called 'tentjacht,' a covered pleasure craft, which has just moored, while passengers in Zaan regional costume disembark and are welcomed on the quay. Such vessels were used for excursions through the water-rich regions of North Holland. In the background appear the wooden houses of Zaandam, with their characteristic gabled façades and neatly trimmed trees lining the water. The Zaan region ranked among the earliest industrialised areas of Europe in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, with hundreds of windmills employed in a wide range of industries, from sawmills and oil mills to dye works and paper mills. At the same time, the area retained a distinctly rural and picturesque character, with wooden houses and narrow waterways. In this lithograph, Hendrik Greven (1787-1854) presents not only Zaandam itself, but also an idealised image of nineteenth-century Holland: orderly, prosperous, and picturesque. Prijs: Euro 275,-.

In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (voorstelling) 16…x 22 cm. (Lijst: 36,5 x 40,5 cm.) We zien de Prins Hendrikkade vanaf de nieuwe Stadsherberg naar de (tegenwoordig gedempte) Martelaarsgracht. Rechts op de achtergrond de koepel van de Ronde Lutherse Kerk. Het gedeelte van de Prins Hendrikkade bij deze hoek werd Haringpakkerij genoemd, omdat hier door de haringpakkers de haring werd gezouten en gekuipt. De haringpakkerstoren werd gesloopt in 1829. Cornelis Springer (1817-1891) was een invloedrijk man in het Amsterdamse kunstleven. Hij was secretaris, vicevoorzitter, voorzitter en zelfs erelid van het Amsterdamse kunstenaarsgenootschap Arti et Amicitiae. Als kunstenaar wist hij een reputatie te vestigen als een zeer bekwaam schilder. Mede door Springers populariteit was er in de 19e-eeuw een goede markt ontstaan voor stadsgezichten met historische gebouwen. Prijs: Euro 350 (incl. lijst).

"Z.M. Stoomfregat Evertsen". Colour lithograph made by Ruurt de Vries (18131874) after a design by Johan Conrad Greive (18371891), published in Amsterdam by Frans Buffa around 1860. Size (image) 34.5 x 50.5 cm (including text: 42.5 x 52 cm). We see the steam frigate Evertsen in the port of Antwerp, with the Citadel visible in th…e background on the right. The ships of the Evertsen class were heavy frigates with auxiliary steam power. The primary goal of the designers of these ships was to create a steam-powered vessel capable of firing a full broadside meaning all the cannons on one side could be fired simultaneously. This led to screw frigates that were essentially slightly longer versions of their wind-powered counterparts, with the added length used for the engine installation and coal storage. Even so, it proved difficult to achieve a broadside that matched the power and effectiveness of traditional sailing frigates. Weight had to be saved on the engines and coal storage, and therefore these ships were intended to use their engines only in battle and emergencies, and to sail under wind power the rest of the time. The steam frigate was a symbol of 19th-century technological progress. Johan Conrad Greive depicted the ship with great precision, emphasizing its imposing size. In reality, however, the steam frigate had serious flaws, and it was expected that it would be lost in the first major storm. The ship, launched in 1857, would later serve as a barracks ship. DE KALVERSTRAAT, HET ELYSIUM VAN ONZE FLANEURS EN ONZE GRISETTES "Vue D'Amsterdam no 22. De Kalverstraat, van den Heiligeweg naar de Munt." Ets met aquatint vervaardigd door A. Lutz, naar een tekening van Cornelis de Kruyf, 1825 uitgegeven door Frans Buffa & Zn. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (incl. tekst): 20,5 x 13,7 cm…. We zien de Kalverstraat vanaf de kruising met de Heiligeweg naar de Munttoren. Aan de linkerzijde zit tegenwoordig La Place en de (inmiddels gesloten) V&D, aan de rechterzijde de Kalvertoren, America Today en Marks & Spencer. De Kalverstraat was in het verleden "de slagader van het groote lichaam, dat men Amsterdam noemt. Het Elysium van onze flaneurs en onze grisettes [vrouwelijke Bohemiens], de theatervoorstelling van weelde, van glasblazerijen, van pracht en bankroeten [door het teveel geld aan uitgeven winkelen]". Wijkmeester Willem Meijer vertelde over de vroeg 19de-eeuwse Kalverstraat: "Boekwinkels zijn er in alle vakken en talen; uitnemende Prentverzamelingen, waaronder die der heren Buffa, Josi en vooral den heer Maaskamp uitmunten; zilver- en goudwerk van de zuiverste en smaakvolste bewerking; porcelein van de beste soort, zoo wel van inlandsche als uitheemsche fabrieken; pendules, rijk in vinding en kostbare versierselen; kleeden van den jongsten smaak voor beide seksen, en huishoudelijke tentoonstellingen, die het gehuwde paar in de gelegenheid stellen, om hunnen woning, binnen een enkel uur met al het nodige of tot overtollig sieraard begeerde huisraad te stoffeeren. Ziedaar den omvang van een koopvertier, die voor de beste straten van Londen en Parijs nauwelijks behoeft te zwichten, en die met eigen oogen moet aanschouwd worden, om al den levendigen indruk daarvan te gevoelen." En over de café's in die tijd: "In de weekdagen begeven de aanzienlijken zich des morgens en ook des avonds naar de Koffijhuizen en de Sociëteiten. Koffijhuizen waren er voorheen wel twee en twintig in Amsterdam, waarvan acht in de Kalverstraat, maar zommige van deze zijn door tijdsomstandigheden verkogt en tot Winkels ingericht. Koffijhuijzen dienen meest tot bijeenkomsten voor het aangaan der Beurs en in de Winteravonden, of tot het speelen van Billardpartijen." Bij veel gelegenheden bleek de Kalverstraat toen het brandpunt van de grootstedelijke drukte te zijn: "Op Oudejaarsavond, als in de koffiehuizen de bezoekers, onder het genot van een glaasje punch, de klokslag van twaalven afwachten en het afgelopen jaar met solemnele schoten plechtig uitgeleide wordt gedaan; op Nieuwjaardag als as- en vuilniskarlieden, nachtwachten, krantenbezorgers enz. enz., kortom de meest uiteenlopende categorieën van dienstvaardigen fooien verzamelen, in ruil voor een lang nieuwjaarsgedicht of een verslag van het afgelopen jaar op rijm; bij gelegenheid van de Stille Omgang, en ook als de Koning, 'de leeuw van Holland, de ridderlijke Willem II', zijn jaarlijks bezoek aan de hoofdstad brengt. Voor bijna elke stoep zijn dan enige ruwe planken geslagen, ter bescherming van de winkelruiten tegen het gedrang. Op de pothuizen [aanbouw naast een huis] werden staanplaatsen verhuurd, tegen betaling van 25 cent p.p. en verderop ziet men, tegen de tijd dat de koning verwacht wordt, voor halfopgeschoven ramen dames bloothoofds [parbleu!] zitten en daarachter heren die lange pijpen roken. Is het kermis, dan dringen de opgeschikte dienstmeisjes uit alle zijstraten door de Kalverstraat naar het brandpunt van het vermaak: de Botermarkt [Rembrandtplein]. In de Kalverstraat is er bij feestelijke gelegenheden ook verlichting, door middel van sterren en erepoorten van vetglaasjes om de deuren. De koek- en banketbakkers illumineren bovendien op Sint Nicolaasavond. Prijs: Euro 650,-.

Amsterdam Gezigt genomen op de Nieuwe Brug/Vue prise du Nieuwe Brug. Lithografie vervaardigd door Monthelier naar een tekening van N.M.J. Chapuy, uitgegeven omstreeks 1850 door Frans Buffa en Zonen in de reeks Nieuwe Panorama's der Stad Amsterdam. Later met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (incl. titel) 31,5 x 43,5 cm. We zien het Damrak…in zuidelijke richting vanaf de Nieuwebrug naar de Oudebrug met daar aan rechts de Korenbeurs. In de verte de Beurs van Zocher, het Paleis op de Dam en Nieuwe Kerk. Oorspronkelijk was het Damrak het deel van de rivier de Amstel tussen de Dam en het IJ. Via een sluis bij de Dam stroomde de rivier vanuit het Rokin in het Damrak en mondde vervolgens uit in het IJ. Hier lag een deel van de oude haven van Amsterdam. Waar nu het Centraal Station ligt, stond een rij meerpalen in het IJ, waaraan grotere schepen konden afmeren. In 1883 werd het deel van het Damrak, tussen Beurs van Zocher en de Oudebrugsteeg gedempt. Sinds 1903 staat hier de Beurs van Berlage. De huizen aan de Warmoesstraat links op de voorstelling, staan ook tegenwoordig nog met de achtergevel in het water. In het overgebleven deel van het "Natte Damrak" meren thans rondvaartboten af. Links zien we ook de Oudekerkstoren. Prijs: Euro 975,-.

Links de Buitenkant (later Prins Hendrikkade) en ingang Geldersekade, Schreierstoren en Kamperhoofd, midden achter de Nieuwe Stadsherberg, rechts Kraansbomen. Het Westerdok ontstond in 1832 toen door aanleg van de Westerdoksdam en Westerdokseiland dit deel van het IJ werd afgescheiden en daardoor ook geen eb en vloed meer kende in het toen nog in open verbinding met de Zuiderzee staande IJ. Rechts de Buitenkant (de tegenwoordige Prins Hendrikkade), langs het Kamperhoofd naar Schreierstoren (vroeger delen van de stadsmuur van Amsterdam) en ingang Geldersekade. Geheel rechts de toegang tot de Oudezijds Kolk. Het Oosterdok ontstond in 1832 toen door aanleg van de Oosterdoksdam dit deel van het IJ werd afgescheiden en daardoor geen eb en vloed meer kende in het toen nog in open verbinding met de Zuiderzee staande IJ. In de achtergrond van de voorstelling ligt het Magazijn der Marine. Tot 1795 nog als 's Lands Zeemagazijn het belangrijkste gebouw van de Admiraliteit van Amsterdam. Dit was een van de vijf Admiraliteitscolleges die zorgden voor bescherming op zee van de koopvaardijvloot en het grondgebied van de Republiek. De oorlogsvloot diende hiertoe te worden uitgerust, bevoorraad en onderhouden. De goederen die hiervoor nodig waren, werden in het magazijn opgeslagen, zoals scheepsbenodigdheden en wapens. Tegenwoordig is hier het Scheepvaartmuseum gehuisvest. Prijs: Euro 650,-.

"Gezigt op de Waterkant en reede van Paramaribo" [View on the Waterkant and port of Paramaribo], color lithograph made by Jacob Eduard van Heemskerck van Beest after a drawing by Gerard Voorduin, published in Amsterdam in 1860 by Frans Buffa as part of a series of prints with views of the Dutch West Indies. Size: (view) 27,5 x 4…1,5 cm. It is very busy on the Suriname River. In front of the Waterkant, large sailing ships are anchored while small boats come and go. On the right an Indian in a dugout canoe, in the front a pondo, a ferry, with which products from the plantations were transported to the city, in this case barrels of sugar. Behind it a Curaçao schooner with the Dutch flag. The building with the red roof behind it is the Waag, where products such as coffee were weighed before being exported. To the left of it, the so-called Platte Brug, a mooring place for tent boats. The buildings on the Waterkant date from after the great city fire of 1821, when the entire street was reduced to ashes. Amsterdam Gezigt genomen op den Dam. Vue prise sur la place du Dam. Fraaie lithografie vervaardigd door Bachelier naar een tekening van N.J.M. Chapuy, uitgegeven omstreeks 1850 te Amsterdam door Frans Buffa en Zonen in de reeks Nieuwe Panorama's der Stad Amsterdam. In de tijd met de hand gekleurd. Afm. (incl. titel) 31,5 x 43,5…cm We zien de Dam in de richting van het Koninklijk Paleis en de Nieuwe Kerk. Op de voorgrond rechts de Nieuwe Beurs, naar ontwerp van architect Jan David Zocher. Dit neoclassicistische beursgebouw verving het oude verzakte beursgebouw van Hendrick de Keyser in 1845. Het gebouw werd niet neergezet op de plaats van de oude beurs, op het Rokin (daar waar tegenwoordig de Industrieele Groote Club huisvest), maar aan de noordzijde van de Dam, op het Damrak, ter plaatse van de Vismarkt. De vismarkt was al verhuisd naar de noordzijde van de Nieuwmarkt. Het ontwerp viel niet bij iedereen in de smaak, maar er waren ook praktische bezwaren. Vanwege het open binnenhof en omdat de nieuwe beurs, in tegenstelling tot die van De Keyser, naar het zuidwesten gericht was, had men, vooral 's winters, vaak last van ijzige tocht. Spottend sprak men dan ook van 'het togtige wonder van Amsterdam'. Nog geen drie drie jaar na de opening, werd het binnenhof overdekt. Maar de kritiek bleef niet uit. De breedte van het Damrak op de hoek van de Dam bedroeg slechts 15 meter. Toen de beurs gebouwd werd was dit geen probleem, maar toen een paardentramlijn langs het Damrak werd aangelegd naar het Centraal Station, ging dat maar net. Bovendien nam de welvaart na omstreeks 1870 steeds meer toe, waardoor de beurs nu ook te klein was geworden. Het pand werd uiteindelijk gesloopt in 1903 toen Beurs van Berlage haar deuren opende. Thans staat op deze plek de Bijenkorf. Links op de prent staat het Commandantshuis, een huizencomplex dat tijdens de eerste regeringsjaren van koning Willem I in gebruik was als woning van de stadscommandant. Het Commandantshuis stond letterlijk in een kwade reuk vanwege een groot openbaar toilet aan de achterzijde. Het pand werd gesloopt in 1912, thans staat hier het Nationaal Monument.
