Still today the vestiges of slavery can be felt. Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845) and Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) are two autobiographies, written by two former slaves, who succeeded in escaping slavery and all its inexpressible cruelties. They are considered two of the most influential, and groundbreaking works of the Antebellum Period, which bear witness to slavery in the United States. These two narratives 'that have become twin classics in African American literature course' (cf. Boesenberg 1999: 121), shall be compared, discussed and analysed in this paper. However, Boesenberg's classification of the texts as 'twin classics' could be misread and give rise to misinterpretation, as it may not be the most fitting term. Twins are widely thought of being almost the same. One might argue that this is not entirely true for Jacobs's and Douglass's narratives.The aim of this paper will be to point out some crucial similarities and differences between Douglass's and Jacobs's autobiographies. The first part of the paper briefly introduces some important similarities of the two narratives. In a second part focus will be given to distinctive features of these texts: family ties, gender difference, sexual exploitation, and manhood and womanhood. In a third part the motif of literacy and its meaning for the author's liberation will be discussed. The conclusion summarizes the preceded chapters and critically disputes Boesenberg's statement of the twin classics.

I shall explain some of the most important devices of their theory, such as target, source, and mapping and briefly elucidate the systematicity that underlies metaphorical conceptualization. The analysis of the conceptual metaphor, LOVE IS A JOURNEY, will reveal some ambiguities about Lakoff's and Johnson's theory. By doing this, I will consider some of the major critiques and analyze whether there is an underlying conceptual metaphoric system in our everyday language.

Die Figur des gleichsam faszinierenden wie teuflischen Tyrannen und vermeintlichen Titel- Helden scheint seit Shakespeares Zeit nichts von seiner Anziehungskraft eingebüßt zu haben und ist heute noch eines der beliebtesten Aufführungsstücke im Shakespeare-Kanon. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Figur und dem Charakter Richards von Gloucester. Das erste Kapitel soll helfen, die Persönlichkeitsstruktur Richards herauszuarbeiten und Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen zu klären, unter denen sich Richard zum mordenden Bösewicht entwickelte. In Kapitel zwei stehen Richards verschiedene Gesichter im Zentrum der Untersuchung. Dabei interessiert v. a., inwieweit seine schauspielerischen Fähigkeiten als Werkzeug zur Durchsetzung seiner Absichten und Pläne dienten. Kapitel drei widmet sich der Frage nach der Rolle seiner Umwelt und untersucht, inwieweit das Verhalten der anderen Dramenfiguren die Entwicklung Richards vorangetragen, unterstützt oder ihr entgegen gewirkt hat. Das vierte Kapitel beschreibt Richards sukzessiven Machtverlust und Untergang und beleuchtet die Gründe dafür, weshalb Richard schließlich scheiterte. Im fünften und letzten Kapitel werden nochmals kurz die wichtigsten Ergebnisse zusammengefasst.

Weder lässt sich der Terminus in Wörterbüchern der ersten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts finden, noch ist sicher geklärt, ob es sich tatsächlich um eine Brechtsche Wortschöpfung handelt. Brecht war es allerdings, der diesen Missverständnisse provozierende[n] Begriff , der sich in vielen seiner Fragmente, Notizen und Berichte finden lässt, geläufig gemacht hatte. Erst als am 28. Juli 1929 im Rahmen der Festtage Deutsche Kammermusik Baden-Baden 1929 das Lehrstück von Brecht und dem Komponisten Hindemith (Brecht zeichnete sich für den Text, Hindemith für die Musik verantwortlich) uraufgeführt wurde, setzte sich der Terminus Lehrstück als Begriff und bald schon als Schlagwort in der Musikkritik durch. Er bezeichnete seither ein neues musikalisches Genre, einen eigenen Spieltypus, der sich in Form, Ursprung und Verwendungszweck von den klassischen Theaterstücken unterschied und sich von seinem Verwendungszusammenhang her definierte: als pädagogisch motivierte Gebrauchskunst für Laien. Diesem damals neuartigen Spieltypus also widmet sich diese Arbeit, wobei auf die gerade angesprochene musikalische Komponente aus Platzgründen leider keine Rücksicht genommen werden kann. Auch hat dies nichts mit dem bis in die jüngste Vergangenheit gemachten Versäumnis der germanistischen Diskussion zu tun, die Musik als integralen Bestandteil der Lehrstücke anzuerkennen. Herausgearbeitet werden soll vor allem der fast revolutionäre Charakter dieses neuen Spieltypus in einem von sozialen, gesellschaftlichen und vor allem wirtschaftlichen Umwälzungen geprägten, technischen Zeitalter, in dem auch der gesamte Kulturbetrieb krisenhaften Entwicklungen unterworfen war. Auch soll gezeigt werden, inwieweit die Technifizierung und die gesellschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen die Menschen, aber auch die Kunst selbst beeinflusste. Anhand der Maßnahme, sicherlich eines der umstrittensten Lehrstücke Brechts, sollen Lehrinhalte und Lernziele eines seiner Lehrstücke dargestellt und dabei gezeigt werden, dass es sich bei den Lehrstücken keinesfalls um starre Gebilde handelte, sondern Brecht immer wieder dazu bereit war, seine Texte auch selbstkritisch zu betrachten und ggf. zu ändern.

Die Figur des gleichsam faszinierenden wie teuflischen Tyrannen und vermeintlichen Titel-¿Helden¿ scheint seit Shakespeares Zeit nichts von seiner Anziehungskraft eingebüßt zu haben und ist heute noch eines der beliebtesten Aufführungsstücke im Shakespeare-Kanon. Die vorliegende Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Figur und dem Charakter Richards von Gloucester. Das erste Kapitel soll helfen, die Persönlichkeitsstruktur Richards herauszuarbeiten und Voraussetzungen und Bedingungen zu klären, unter denen sich Richard zum mordenden Bösewicht entwickelte. In Kapitel zwei stehen Richards ¿verschiedene Gesichter¿ im Zentrum der Untersuchung. Dabei interessiert v. a., inwieweit seine schauspielerischen Fähigkeiten als Werkzeug zur Durchsetzung seiner Absichten und Pläne dienten. Kapitel drei widmet sich der Frage nach der Rolle seiner Umwelt und untersucht, inwieweit das Verhalten der anderen Dramenfiguren die Entwicklung Richards vorangetragen, unterstützt oder ihr entgegen gewirkt hat. Das vierte Kapitel beschreibt Richards sukzessiven Machtverlust und Untergang und beleuchtet die Gründe dafür, weshalb Richard schließlich scheiterte. Im fünften und letzten Kapitel werden nochmals kurz die wichtigsten Ergebnisse zusammengefasst.

Still today the vestiges of slavery can be felt. Frederick Douglass's Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave (1845) and Harriet Jacobs's Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl (1861) are two autobiographies, written by two former slaves, who succeeded in escaping slavery and all its inexpressible cruelties. They are considered two of the most influential, and groundbreaking works of the Antebellum Period, which bear witness to slavery in the United States. These two narratives 'that have become twin classics in African American literature course' (cf. Boesenberg 1999: 121), shall be compared, discussed and analysed in this paper. However, Boesenberg's classification of the texts as 'twin classics' could be misread and give rise to misinterpretation, as it may not be the most fitting term. Twins are widely thought of being almost the same. One might argue that this is not entirely true for Jacobs's and Douglass's narratives.The aim of this paper will be to point out some crucial similarities and differences between Douglass's and Jacobs's autobiographies. The first part of the paper briefly introduces some important similarities of the two narratives. In a second part focus will be given to distinctive features of these texts: family ties, gender difference, sexual exploitation, and manhood and womanhood. In a third part the motif of literacy and its meaning for the author's liberation will be discussed. The conclusion summarizes the preceded chapters and critically disputes Boesenberg's statement of the twin classics. 28 pp. Englisch.

Would we not typically use infancy when we talk about children, or refer to a person's childhood If we consider the above examples, we can easily draw the conclusion that these words - besides their original meaning - can be used 'outside of their natural environment'. Words and their meaning can be transferred to a different domain. The name for such a transfer is metaphor. [.] This paper will highlight Lakoff's and Johnson's major claim that metaphor is not only a poetic device, or simply a (linguistic) matter of spoken words, but that 'our ordinary conceptual system, in terms of which we both think and act, is fundamentally metaphorical in nature' (Lakoff & Johnson 1980: 3). I shall explain some of the most important devices of their theory, such as target, source, and mapping and briefly elucidate the systematicity that underlies metaphorical conceptualization. The analysis of the conceptual metaphor, LOVE IS A JOURNEY, will reveal some ambiguities about Lakoff's and Johnson's theory. By doing this, I will consider some of the major critiques and analyze whether there is an underlying conceptual metaphoric system in our everyday language. 28 pp. Englisch.
