No Binding. Condizione: Good. Kawamura Bumpo (illustratore). Sumi-e style woodblock print by Kawamura Bumpo, being a page from a previously bound book. Dated by Gallery Kobutoya to Bunka 10, to correspond with the year 1813, but uncertain. Attributed to the publisher Eirakuya Toshiro of Nagoya, Japan but attribution uncertain. Likely one page of a two-page spread. Depicted are numerous persons from everyday life, variously standing or seated or recumbent, pursuing leisure activities or napping. Two men playing a hand game, two men playing a board game, people reading, woman washing her hair, woman looking at herself in a mirror, etc. There is a touch of whimsy to the depictions, comical cartoon-like illustration typical of the artist. Black ink with medium blue ink wash on beige mulberry [?] paper, tipped in to a tissue paper mat, not laid down. Image: 18.5 x 12 cm., 7.25 x 4.75 inches; mat: 30.5 x 21 cm., 12 x 8.25 inches. Moderate soiling/fingering with noticeable black smudging in lower left corner as to image of a person with pen in hand at a tray-desk. Else a good impression, with the black ink lines mostly fairly crisp. Overall Good to Good Plus condition. Weight: 0.2 oz. Kawamura Bumpo, sometimes rendered as Bunpo, [1779-1821], was a master of the Shijo school. He was born in Yamashiro Province, in modern day Kyoto Prefecture. The artist was known for his quotidian scenes of ordinary life and work as well as for his landscapes. Fellow artist Tanomura Chikuden once praised Bumpo's fluid lines and ability to draw human figures, while his landscape paintings are known for their use of heavy brush strokes and thick contours. This print sold at one time by Gallery Kabutoya in San Francisco, now out of business. Suitable for framing.

Condizione: Very good. First series, one volume. Fine copy with the original embossed geometric blue covers in good condition and also the title label, as described by Mitchell, page 227. Bumpo lived from 1779 to 1821 in Kyoto. Mitchell writes 'Skilled at landscape and figures, his fame was equal to that of Ganku and he occupied a position in relation to Ganku similar to that of Rosetsu in relation to Okyo'. Holloway describes and reproduces him amply. This fine album with its bold line and outline shows across double pages both peaceful and complex compositions, generally using pale color, sometimes semi comic or more often simply pastoral, and occasionally devoting the composition to a sprig of plum blossom or a bird on a twig of willow. The colors are quietly and subtly handled, the range very wide. Hillier has a lot to say about Bumpo in his Chapter 11, page 232 onwards, and reproduces rather inadequately several examples from this book.

Condizione: Very good. Three volumes. The first series had appeared in two volumes in 1779, but as usual the works are completely separate and independent. The first series of the Kanga Shinan had been illustrated by Kanyosai, not by Bumpo. This is much more than a painting manual of course. It includes studies of tree forms, house building, leaves; many pages of figures closely observed, not merely demonstrating ways to draw them, and taking part in all kinds of activities from calligraphy to painting to garden pruning or, more familiarly, leaning on a garden broom doing nothing, and kite-flying - almost such scenes as Hokusai showed in the Mangwa. Then we have a splendid series of the Hangchow lake scenery with the most delicate of color tints for outline and background; and a volume of strongly drawn scenes of mountain, shrine, wood, rock, cultivation and temple. Color is always used delicately in these books as light hint of tint rather than brilliant prominence. Original pale yellow and pale green covers, title labels. Mitchell, page 335; Holloway, figure 121 (final figure of his book).
