Alleged Communistic Activities at Howard University, from the office of U.S. Senator Kenneth Keating, U.S. Senate, Document 217, 74th Congress, 2d Session. May 12, 1936 - Kelly Miller, Mordecai Johnson, Ralph Bunche, W. E. B. Du Bois, et al. A report from the Acting Secretary of the Interior on an investigation into charges leveled by Howard University professor Kelly Miller that Howard University President, Mordecai Johnson, was enabling Communist influence at the University, particularly by allowing radical speakers at a conference titled The Position of the Negro in our Economic Crisis, while side-lining views of conservatives and New Dealers. The conference was held May 18-20th 1935 and was co-organized by the Joint Committee on National Recovery (representing ~20 black social and religious organizations) and the Social Sciences Department of Howard University with Dr. Ralph J. Bunche leading the program planning. Speakers included then Atlanta University Professor W. E. B. Du Bois, who supported socialism in his remarks but disavowed the American Communist Party stating: "They believe, apparently, in immediate, violent, and bloody revolution, and they are willing to try any and all means of raising hell anywhere and under any circumstances. This is a silly program, even for white men. For American colored men it is suicide." The most controversial speakers were James W. Ford - VP candidate on the Communist ticket, Norman Thomas - Presidential candidate on the Socialist ticket (in absentia), and Ernest Rice McKinney of the American Labor Party. The majority of witnesses stated that the conference was not overtly Communist in character and that the overthrow of the government by force was not advocated for. No direct statements were made by Johnson and the only criticism leveled towards him is in allowing the radical speakers to appear. Kenneth Keating was a Republican U.S. Representative (1947-1959) and Senator (1959-1965) representing New York. This document would have preceded his time in congress but he was a staunch anti-communist. Stapled self-wraps, pp. 71; good condition with stamps of former owner and the office of U.S. Senator Kenneth Keating on front, soil and damp staining to front cover, fore-edge tail corner chipped extending through several pages, head corner creased.
