With its emphasis on the dynasty's concern for control of the sea both the Mediterranean and the Red Sea and the Nile, this book offers a new and original perspective on Ptolemaic power in a key period of Hellenistic history. Within the developing Aegean empire of the Ptolemies, the role of the navy is examined together with that of its admirals. Egypt's close relationship to Rhodes is subjected to scrutiny, as is the constant threat of piracy to the transport of goods on the Nile and by sea. Along with the trade in grain came the exchange of other products. Ptolemaic kings used their wealth for luxury ships and the dissemination of royal portraiture was accompanied by royal cult. Alexandria, the new capital of Egypt, attracted poets, scholars and even philosophers; geographical exploration by sea was a feature of the period and observations of the time enjoyed a long afterlife. Throughout history empire has required communications over an extended area. In the case of the Ptolemies, who ruled Egypt for three hundred years, the wide-ranging power and cultural achievements of their realm depended on their practical and intellectual mastery of Alexandria's waterborne connections across the Mediterranean and up the Nile. Original Paperback, sauberes frisches Exemplar. 224 S. Praktisch unbemerkt von der Romanistik liegt seit Jahren eine Monographie über die in P. Giss. 401 überlieferte Constitutio Antoniniana vor, mit der bekanntlich Caracalla im Jahre 212 (oder 213) allen freien Bewohnern des Imperium Romanum das Bürgerrecht verlieh. Anstatt sich an der leidigen Frage der davon ausgenommenen dediticii festzubeißen, sucht der Autor den politischen Hintergrund der Konstitution zu ergründen, wobei er sich nicht mit der von Cassius Dio überlieferten ratio begnügt, der Kaiser habe lediglich den Kreis der zur Zahlung der Erbschaftssteuer Verpflichteten erweitern wollen; diese mußten nämlich nur römische Bürger entrichten. Zu Beginn des 3. Jh. hatten die Wohlhabenden ohnedies schon das römische Bürgerrecht. Die Ärmeren drängten in das Militär, um das Bürgerrecht zu erlangen. B u r a s e l i s fragt zu Recht, warum Caracalla dem Heer diese Quelle der Rekrutierung verstopft habe. Der Autor nimmt, im Gegensatz zur Literatur vor ihm, die aus der Konstitution selbst (trotz aller Lücken in Z. 3-7) erkennbare Begründung ernst, Caracalla habe mit seiner Maßnahme den Kult der Staatsgötter einschließlich seiner vergöttlichten Vorgänger auf breiteste Basis stellen und damit seine Dynastie im Reich fester verankern wollen. Das sei der Inhalt des ,göttlichen Geschenks'gewesen, dessen soziale, rechtliche und psychologische Parameter Buraselis umsichtig analysiert. (Gerhard Thür, Buchrezension).
