Aggiungi al carrello1st Edition. FIRST EDITION OF GOTCH AND BURCH'S 19th c. NERVE & MUSCLE STUDY OF MALAPTERURUS ELECTRICUS, A SPECIES OF ELECTRIC CATFISH. Extracted from The Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society for the year 1896. In this important experiment aimed at understanding the ability of electric fish to stun smaller fishes and…even numb a human hand while not causing harm to themselves or others of their species, Gotch and Burch recorded electrical activity using a capillary electrometer, finding "that the discharge of a single 'disk' of the fish's organ was in the range of 40 to 50 mV, and thus similar to that of nerves" (Finger, The Shocking History of Electric Fishes, 408). Handsomely illustrated. CONDITION & DETAILS: London: Harrison and Sons. Complete extract. 4to. 11 x 8.75 inches. Three plates and in-text figures. Clean and bright. Near fine condition in every way.

Aggiungi al carrelloPaperback. First Edition. 8vo. Stiff glossy white wrappers. 252pp. Uncut. Near fine. Slightest bit of wear to outer wrappers (only), else tight and internally near fine, with the usual light age toning of text block. Superb first edition, entirely in French, of this study of (translation) "The originality of The Yellow Loves and… its influence on T.S. Eliot." Tristan Corbière (1845-75) was an obscure French poet whose sole book ("Des Amours jaunes," 1873) rocketed to fame long after his death. Eliot praised it and it influenced his work -- as this study by the American educator and Jesuit priest Burch (1931-2013) attests. Errata slip tipped in. Scarce and this a lovely copy.
