He writes of his own work: "Poetry, at least as I have learned to want to write it, is a way of giving reality and even courage to the life which a man senses within himself and which he knows, by living among other men, is their chief possession also. The poetry which seems to me the most admirable is characterized by a certain firm delicacy, a style which at once both moves and instructs the sense of life in us. If a man writes poems of his own for any length of time, he learns how much experience of both life and art is required to achieve this style, how few men have been masters of it, and these few seemingly by some grace of nature or intelligence or artistic perception, that cannot be willed by himself into his own possession but only perhaps gradually approached if he has a view of the goal.".

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. 55 pages. Small octavo (9 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original jacket. First edition. William Burford was an American modernist poet who now is most often described by the Internet as the friend of the more renowned poet James Merrill. His style and form are simple and typical for the day, often employing a strict form of repeating tercets or quatrains in conjunction with musically rendered free verse. His poem "A History," which was published by Poetry Magazine in March of 1950, comprised of three quintains, is filled with interesting redactions that are progressed by a varying end-rhyme. In the same issue, Burford's more abstract poem "Four Changes of World" boasts a skill for abstraction and nature imagery. Neither poem appears to be, through a modern vantage point, tasteless or distinctly forgettable. Perhaps it was just his limited exposure. Maybe four years of contribution is not enough participation for the Poetry Foundation to include a hyperlink beneath your name leading to a poet's biography, and two published books of poetry. Or maybe Texan and Western writers are marginalized by the Modern literary canon. Condition: Front flypaper lacking, slight stain to front head corner. Jacket with edge wear, spine toned and small chips to head else very good in like jacket.
