Transactions of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales. In an era when the decline in biodiversity is widely presented as an extinction crisis, there exists the converse problem of overabundance both of native species and alien invading species. Exotic pest species are one of the main threats to the conservation of Australia's biodiversity. Some arrived as welcome guests, such as cane toads or deer, when the ecology of invasions had been little studied. The 2005 forum of the Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales was entitled: "Pest or guest: the zoology of overabundance". It has remained as the title of this book. With cane toads there is now no ambiguity. They are a pest, they are reviled and they are conspicuously non Australian, yet in 1935 they entered as a guest species in became a failed attempt at the control of a beetle in the sugar cane crops. By contrast, many native species have been regarded as a pest in some locations at some periods, but here the definition of pest is more problematic, at the very least it generates a robust discussion. At the outer extreme is the concept of too many people. It is one of the world's most pressing ecological problems, yet one where there is the least satisfactory resolution. The ecological reasoning is the same for cane toads, native species or people. The issue is the concept of overabundance.

Heavy (1.0 Kg), and extra postage may be requested to destinations outside Australia. 240 pp. The valuable papers in this book, edited by Chris Dickman, Daniel Lunney and Shelley Burgin, were presented at a forum on 23 October 2004. The aim was to discuss whether the animals of arid Australia are 'out on their own' in terms of their unique adaptations for desert life, our view of them, and their long term prospects for survival. The many colour photos help to tell a very important story. This book will be of interest to anyone who wants to learn about the unique animals that help to make up Australia.

This book provides the first detailed summary of the biology of the genus Lampropholis, also known as Garden Skinks, Grass Skinks, Litter Skinks, Penny Lizards, and Sunskinks. This genus, an Australian endemic, includes two common, widespread species (one of which has been inadvertently introduced into Hawaii, New Zealand, and Lord Howe Island) and a group of satellite species with restricted geographic distributions. Much information about these lizards resides in obscure articles and unpublished theses. This book integrates those scattered data, providing the first comprehensive account of all aspects of the biology of the genus, including its life history, distribution, dispersal, ecology, behaviour, thermal biology, physiology, diet, predators, parasites and diseases, population biology, genetics, threats and conservation, taxonomy, phylogeny, and evolution.

While carbon offsetting in its various forms is widespread globally, few countries have fully legislated and put into operation other offset policies. This edited collection aims to fill the gap of knowledge on environmental offsets, from theory to practice.Environmental Offsets addresses four major forms of environmental offsets biodiversity offsets, carbon offsets, offsetting the depletion of non-renewable resources and offsetting the destruction of built heritage. The authors discuss their research and provide case studies from around Australia and across the developing world. Using examples such as the Sydney Olympics, the Bakossi Forest Reserve in Cameroon and green roof gardens, this book highlights the strengths and weaknesses of environmental offsetting and illustrates how jobs can be created in the offsetting process.Environmental Offsets is both a historical source in our understanding of environmental offsetting and a guide to the way forward. It illustrates what works, what does not and what can be improved for the future. Discusses the strengths and weaknesses of the different forms of environmental offsets.
