Seine Mitglieder definieren sich nicht (vornehmlich) über gleiche Interessen und Sympathie als zusammengehörig, wie in anderen, externen Beziehungen, sondern über ihre Verwandtschaft miteinander. Dadurch sind sie aneinander gebunden ihr Leben lang. Die Familie wirkt für einen Mensch stark identitätsstiftend, und sie ist die Folie, auf der er andere Menschen und Beziehungen zu ihnen betrachtet.Zugleich ist die Familie aber auch ein sehr dynamisches System, dass auf die Ablösung der Kinder vom Elternhaus hinausläuft. Diese Ablösung, wodurch sich die gemeinsame Lebenspraxis der (Kern-) Familie auflöst, ist dabei nicht lediglich ein Nebeneffekt, sondern konstitutiv und notwendig für das Prinzip 'Familie'. Mit der Ablösung von der Herkunftsfamilie beginnt eine zweite Phase, nämlich die, in der das Individuum selbst eine Familie gründet. Dort ist seine ehemalige Rolle nunmehr vertauscht gegen die des Elternteils. Ohne die Auflösung der Herkunftsfamilie wäre das Gründen einer neuen Familie nicht möglich. So kann man sich über Generationen hinweg einen Prozess des ewigen Gründens und Auflösens vorstellen, durch den einzig und allein der Fortbestand der Menschheit gesichert ist.Wenn auch das Grundprinzip das ewig gleiche ist, so gibt es doch in der Praxis etliche Formen und Riten, wie der Übergang von der einen in die andere Familie vollzogen wird. Unter kultur-anthropologischem Aspekt wunderbar nachzulesen in den Untersuchungen von Claude Lévi-Strauss. Ebenso verändern sich aber auch innerhalb einer Gesellschaft die Formen des Wechsels. Zu diesem Thema sei die Befragung verschiedener Paare im heutigen Frankreich von Jean-Claude Kaufmann empfohlen.Bisherige Formen können abgelöst werden oder es kommen neue Möglichkeiten hinzu. In der Regel wird das Arsenal von verfügbaren Praxen auf diese Weise komplexer. Das heißt, dem Individuum stehen mehr Möglichkeiten zur Verfügung. Eine Möglichkeit, das Leben in einer WG als Zwischenstadium zwischen Herkufts- und Gründungsfamilie, soll im Zentrum der vorliegen Arbeit stehen.
