In good condition, with light superficial scuffing. Hinges remain in good condition and text block remains bound well. Light markings and marginalia. Some scuffing present on title page. Includes foldout portrait frontispiece and two additional foldouts, with portrait slightly torn along edges. General age-related toning to pages, along with periodic foxing and wear. Please see photographs and ask any questions prior to purchasing. A scarce and nicely preserved work on the life of Pope Adrian VI (1459-1523). The only Dutchman to serve as pope, he was elected in 1522 and died the following year. His short reign was marked by reform attempts within the church while attempting to combat both Lutheran and Ottoman advances.

Bound in contemporary vellum. Endpapers a bit dustsoiled, pp 30-60 a bit browned, still a fine/good copy. First edition of this biography of Pope Adrian VIth ( Adriaan Floriszoon Boeyens - Utrecht 1459 - Rome 1523). He was the only pope of pre-modern times to be elected outside the Italian circles, born in the Netherlands ( Low Countries) , he was the teacher of Charles Vth ( Charles Quint), emperor of the Holy Empire, studied and became professor at Louvain university and had Erasmus among his students. In 1520, in the absence of Charles Vth , he was appointed Regent of Spain. His short tenure as pope ( 12 months) and the enormous political problems with which he was confronted prevented him of stopping the spread of Luther's ideas.
