Paneled spine has chipping, and cracking along the joint edges. Brown leather has been significantly peeled away, exposing the boards. Bumping to corners, leaving the boards visible, and significant wear to extremities. The front pastedown is partially detached, revealing the interior front board and ex libris bookplate of Penrhyn Chave. With a fore-edge painting depicting a scene of HAWICK, ROXBURGHSHIRE, SCOTLAND, after an engraving by John Greig (fl. 1800-1843) from an original study by Luke Clennell (1781-1840). The fore-edge painting is based on an engraving found in Sir Walter Scott's, Border Antiquities of England and Scotland (Longman & Co., 1814-1817). This well-painted scene is likely of 20th century vintage. / The Dutch scholar Peter Burman was professor of the art of rhetoric and the history of Utrecht, and also of Greek philology. In 1715, he succeeded Perizonius, receiving the chair of history and the Greek language and the art of rhetoric at the Lyon-Batava Academy. Later he was librarian and director of the Lyon-Batava Academy. This is his commentary on Phaedrus, which was originally issued in 1698. PROVENANCE: Thomas M. Der Einband ist leicht berieben und minimal bestoßen, hat aber insgesamt nur leichte Gebrauchsspuren. Das Papier an den Innenseiten der Deckel ist vorne zur Hälfte und hinten ganz vom Deckel gelöst (wirkt wie eine weiter Seite). Das hintere Innengelenk liegt daher etwas frei ist aber trotzdem noch stabil. Beim Umklappen des vorderdeckels ist ein leichtes Klacken im Material hörbar, bei vorsichtiger Verwendung lässt sich das Buch aber gut öffnen und durchblättern. Der Buchblock / die Seiten sind in einem guten bis sehr guten Zustand. Es gibt nur ganz wenige Randbemerkungen außerhalb des Textbreiches in verblasster Tinte und einen mehrzeiligen Eintrag mit Unterschrift auf dem Vorsatzblatt, sonst ist die Ausgabe textsauber. Buch aus einem Nichtraucherhaushalt. Sprache Latein. Phaedrus (* um 20/15 v. Chr. angeblich in Katerini (Griechenland), siehe Abschnitt Leben; um 50/60 n. Chr.), voller Name wohl: Gaius Iulius Phaedrus (oder: Phaeder),[1] war ein römischer Fabeldichter in den Regierungszeiten der Kaiser Augustus, Tiberius, Caligula, Claudius und Nero. Marquard Gude, auch Gudius (* 1. Februar 1635 in Rendsburg; 26. November 1689 in Glückstadt) war ein deutscher Klassischer Philologe, Bibliothekar, Büchersammler und Epigraphiker.
