Condition is VG: aside from the library markings, it is quite clean, binding straight & strong, pages creamy white. Tape residue on both boards from where old DJ was removed & recovered with new mylar. DJ is VG+, with just a slight scrape where old call number was removed from lower spine. Bit of spine fading. In these letters she observes and comments on some of the most well know artists, musicians and writers of the 20th centuy. The letters were chosen for their ability to shed light on the lives of Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas, and also, some for the delightful gossip within them. In addition to typical library treatments, quite a few pages have very faint pencil marks in the margins. A few have some light underlining, and a very few pp have pen marks. Some smudges on endpapers. Thoroughly illustrated with both color and b/w reproductions; all of the illustrations are clean and unmarked. Book has been rebound, boards covered in light brown buckram in like-new condition. Dust jacket is clean and unmarked, but has a lot of wear, fold marks along edges, and a small piece missing from tail of spine. DJ was then encased in library mylar sleeve, protecting it from further damage. Overall certainly a good reading copy.
