The artist Robert Burns (1869-1942) created an exceptionally strong version of the ballad, with striking illustrations and hand-lettering in a monastic script. Burns included the coats of arms of Scottish nobles who might have travelled with Spens on his fateful mission to "Norroway" to bring a princess home. The origins of the ballad are examined by Dr Emily Lyle, and Dr John Purser discusses its musical settings and the wave-like metre of the poetry; Charles Burnett, Ross Herald of the Lyon Court, has identified the artist's source for the coats of arms and the families to which they belonged; Prof Murdo Macdonald examines Burns' relationship with Sir Patric Geddes and his "Evergreen Magazine"; a biography of Burns by Martin Forrest identifies the artistic influences that affected Burns' life and work; a summary about the artist and the ballad is provided by Prof Michael Lynch. This volume concludes with a selected 'Gallery' of Burns' work, which demands recognition for Robert Burns with his contemporaries, "The Glasgow Boys"".
