A Pathologic and Clinical Entity" by Burrill Crohn, Leon Ginzburg and Gordon Oppenheimer, which was published in 1932. Crohn called the disease "regional ileitis", but it is now widely known as "Crohn's disease". There is a memoir of Crohn by Henry D. Janowitz, "Burrill B. Crohn (1884-1983), Life and Work", which can be accessed for free online. Crohn's co-author Leon Ginzburg disputed a number of historical statements about the disease made by Crohn at the end of Crohn's life, concerning the work done in the 1920s and early 1930s by Crohn, on the one hand, and Ginzburg and Oppenheimer on the other. Ginzburg's recollections and critique of Crohn are in "Regional Enteritis: Historical Perspective", published in Gastroenterology, Vol. 90, no. 5, part 1, May 1986, 1310-1311, which can be accessed for free online. But whatever disagreements there are about who deserves credit for the original work on the disease, there is agreement that, as Ginzburg puts it, "there is no doubt that Dr. Crohn 'put regional enteritis on the map,' so to speak. He popularized, publicized, and spent much time, effort, and travel on lecturing and spreading knowledge about it."
