Hoadley, the first regarding the Resurrection of Jesus and the second regarding Paul's evangelism. Burton James Hoadley (1843-1934) served in the Methodist pastorate for for thirty-two years. He was born in Cleveland and served with the Union Army during the Civil War with the 1st Regiment of the Ohio Light Artillery. After the war he was superintendent of schools of Berea, Ohio. He was ordained deacon in 1869 and elder in 1871. He taught at Baldwin University (Berea) for a few years before coming to Oregon in 1895. He served as professor of English at the (Methodist) Portland University and Willamette University for several years. He retired from the Columbia River Conference of the Methodist Church in 1909.
