Durch Freundschaften zu Berühmtheiten wie John Wayne, Martin Luther King oder Marlon Brando ist Gill als Künstler Zeitzeuge einer ganzen Generation geworden. Er wahrte jedoch Distanz zum überschwänglichen Hollywood jener Zeit und zog sich 1972 überraschend zurück, um erst 30 Jahre später wieder auf dem Kunstmarkt zu erscheinen. Der Catalogue Raisonné in zwei Bänden dokumentiert eindrucksvoll sein Schaffen von frühen politischen Motiven zu den Pop-Art-Ikonen seines Spätwerks.James Francis Gill arbeitete zunächst als technischer Zeichner für ein Architekturbüro, bevor er sich gänzlich der Kunst widmete und an der University of Texas, Austin, Malerei studierte. Später lehrte er an der University of Idaho, Moscow, der University of California, Irvine, und der University of Oregon, Eugene.
