N & M Press 2nd reprint (first pub1929, 1st reprint 1993). xv + 407pp with 959 b/w illus and 31 maps SBPublished Price £22 The Silent Cities was Rudyard Kiplingâs inspired name for the Cemeteries of the Western Front, and this book, with the aid of maps, illustrations and descriptive notes, sets out to provide a complete guide to all Cemeteries containing war graves and all Memorials recording the Missing of the Forces of the British Empire who fell in France and Flanders during the Great War. The index lists no less than 2,485 which are identified on the maps. These maps divide the book into geographical sections, and each section contains b/w illustrations and descriptions of those Cemeteries and Memorials, within the limits of the map, that record more tha 40 British Dead. The numbers of other nationalities, e.g. Germans, French, buried in the Cemetery are also given. Some contain âSpecial Memorialsâ indicating officers and men whose graves have been destroyed by shell-fire or who are known or believed to be buried in that Cemetery. This is an essential vade mecum for any visit to the Western Front.
