The study area, Pichavaram mangrove is located along the southeast coast of India. This mangrove environment is rapidly degrading due to natural and man-made disturbances. In order to understand the temporal and spatial changes in the mangrove forest, Landuse / Landcover change detection was carried out for this area using satellite digital data. Five Core samples were collected from widely varying environments in the study area along with twenty surface sediments and twenty water samples. The Core samples were analyzed for grain size, Organic Carbon, Sulphur, Calcium Carbonate, acid-leachable fractions of Fe and Mn, major oxides and bulk concentration of Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu and Zn. Similar to the Core sediments, the surface sediment samples were analyzed for major oxides and trace elements. The water samples were analyzed for pH, Salinity and Dissolved Oxygen. An Organic Carbon budget was developed based on the depth profile of Organic Carbon. Results of all the above analyses were digitized using GIS and a spatial database was created. 144 pp. Englisch.…

Keeping in view the demands of the society, this research work has been undertaken to assess the vulnerability of the Nagapattinam coastline, which extends from Porto Novo in the north to Adhiramapattinam in the south. CVI was computed and a comparison was made between classical and sigmoidal CVI. Static inundation analysis was done for the sea level rises by 1m, 2m, 3m, 4m and 5m, and the towns and villages expected to be severely affected were mapped. Aquifer Vulnerability Index was calculated using GALDIT model to study the vulnerability of Nagapattinam coastal aquifers to saline water intrusion. Finally, a multi-hazard zonation map was prepared to demarcate areas that are affected by all the identified hazards. Suitable management strategies are proposed to mitigate the risks.…

El área de estudio, el manglar de Pichavaram, se encuentra en la costa sureste de la India. Este entorno de manglares se está degradando rápidamente debido a las perturbaciones naturales y antropogénicas. Para entender los cambios temporales y espaciales en el bosque de manglares, se llevó a cabo la detección de los cambios en el uso de la tierra y en la cubierta vegetal de esta zona utilizando datos digitales por satélite. Se recogieron cinco muestras de núcleos en entornos muy variados de la zona de estudio, junto con veinte sedimentos superficiales y veinte muestras de agua. Las muestras de núcleo se analizaron para determinar el tamaño del grano, el carbono orgánico, el azufre, el carbonato de calcio, las fracciones lixiviables de Fe y Mn, los óxidos principales y la concentración global de Fe, Mn, Cr, Cu y Zn. Al igual que en el caso de los sedimentos del núcleo, las muestras de sedimentos superficiales se analizaron para determinar los óxidos principales y los oligoelementos.
