Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book uses neutron diffraction residual stress measurements to analyze the residual stresses in transverse and oblique rail slices subjected to various grinding strategies. These strategies are analyzed as part of understanding the development of high strength alloys and lubrication in rail systems. Shifting focus from wear to service-induced damage, the author argues for the importance of residual stress analysis in estimating the growth rate of fatigue defects that ultimately result in rail failure. The author presents a technique to reconstruct three-dimensional stress state in rails using thin slices, enabling calculation of the axial and Poisson effect losses. Using measurements from rail samples extracted from controlled tests, the author presents a comparison of stress patterns developed from varying combinations of grinding strategies. The results presented suggest grinding has a beneficial effect on rail fatigue life, and the book concludes with a discussion of the optimal grinding frequency using the data from various test subjects. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
