Aggiungi al carrelloWilding, Shrewsbury, 1952. 2nd ed. 344,XXVIIIp. ills. Original green cloth. Upper corner front cover slightly bumped. Library stamps to free endpaper as well as title page. (Rare). 'Pseudolus Noster completes the course begun by its predecessor, Principia. This course aims at giving pupils a sound working knowledge of the Latin language, so that they can write, speak and, above all, read it with reasonale ease, and can tackle the original texts with some confidence. (.) This book follows the basic principles of its predecessor. It treats the language as something to be spoken as well as written, it tries to build the unknown upon the know, it seeks to teach only one thing at a time and in an order which usage seems to demand, and it prefers the example to the rule. It goes a step further and, by touching on Roman background here and there and by introducing it more purposefully in the plays used for revision, bridges the gap between the intentionally youthful and modern atmosphere of Principia and the material of the original texts which are to follow. Thus, while the material for the stories about Pseudolus is derived in the main from the roguish adventures of Til Eulenspiegel, the plays are based upon Roman myth and history. (.) This book (.) is arranged in eight parts. The first contains the basic reading material with the necessary grammar at the end of each chapter. The second part contains a number of poems by Catullus and Martial, which can be introduced and enjoyed at appropriate moments. The third part consists of grammatical exercises, based on the work of each chapter. The fourth part contains English-Latin sentences, designed to ensure that each new point has gone home. (.) The fifth part consists of separate vocabularies listing the most important new words (.). The sixth part gives a complete basic Ars Grammatica and the seventh and eight contain Latin-English and English-Latin vocabularies.' (C.W.E. PECKETT and A.R. MUNDAY in the Preface, pp.3-4).
