Le sue ricerche puntarono a coniugare realismo e dinamismo e la sua prassi scultorea fu innovativa: il suo stile espresse una nuova monumentalità, alla ricerca del movimento, sconvolgendo i canoni e l'immobilità della prospettiva del primo Quattrocento. Nel 2019, nel cinquecentesimo anniversario della scomparsa di Leonardo da Vinci, Palazzo Strozzi dedicherà una mostra al suo maestro: Andrea di Michele di Francesco di Cione, meglio noto come Verrocchio. L'esposizione vuole celebrare la figura di un artista che fu geniale interprete dei valori del Rinascimento nella Firenze medicea di Cosimo il Vecchio, Piero e Lorenzo il Magnifico e che con la sua bottega ha influenzato un'intera generazione di maestri del XV secolo in Italia e in Europa. Il legame instauratosi tra Leonardo e Verrocchio matura grazie al padre dello stesso Leonardo: secondo Vasari, infatti, fu proprio ser Piero, notaio di discreta importanza, a mostrare alcuni disegni del figlio al celebre maestro, il quale decise, intorno al 1470, di prendere Leonardo come apprendista presso la propria bottega a Firenze. Pochi artisti nella storia dell'arte sono stati poliedrici come Verrocchio: egli fu orafo, pittore, scultore e disegnatore. Le sue ricerche puntarono a coniugare realismo e dinamismo e la sua prassi scultorea fu innovativa: il suo stile espresse una nuova monumentalità, alla ricerca del movimento, sconvolgendo i canoni e l'immobilità della prospettiva del primo Quattrocento.
