This is the story of those men and their beloved ship, recorded by a junior officer who served on the famous destroyer from her commissioning in 1939 to April 1943. Detailed chronicle of the author's experiences as officer of a destroyer in the thick of battle with the Japanese Navy, including battle at Guadalcanal. He follows the history of his ship, the USS Sterett, until it was recycled as scrap. The author served as executive officer on the flagship of the Atlantic Fleet after WWII and commanded the USS Moale. He recieved a commendation from the fleet commander for outstanding performance of duty as commander of Destroyer Squadron 6 during the Cuban missile crisis. Before he retired he was also director of research at the National War College. He then was chancellor of the Minnesota state university system. Very good in good dust jacket. Complete ten volume, uniform set, each in original red cloth with stamped gilt lettering and decorative motifs, 4x5 7/8 inches, approximately 300-350 pp each, in original red cloth box with a half front board thus making titles visible. Front board has an open tear along top edge, another open tear along length of lid, 2 inch closed tear at each of the front edges, some soil, dusting on top board, some irregular spots of fading on rear board, 1x3 inches of cloth peeled back from inside of lid. Books themselves have spines faded and gilt dulled along upper portions, bit of faint mottling on cloth, dust darkening on top edges of textblock. In addition, "Around the Tea Table" is MISSING title page, 2 dogears in "Readings", 1 dogear in "Parlor", otherwise all are tight, clean, paper crisp, unmarked, probably never really read.
