Softcover (Disbound) Pamphlet. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Reverend Leonard Bacon (1802?1881) wasa prominent American Congregational preacher, writer, and academic. During his distinguished career, he served as a pastor in New Haven, Connecticut, and later as a professor at Yale University. Bacon was a influential figure in 19th-century religious circles and a notable voice in the anti-slavery movement. Leonard Bacon's "attack" on the Pastoral Union and Theological Institute of Connecticut was part of a larger theological dispute that divided Congregationalists in the early 19th century. Bacon, who was a prominent figure in the "New Haven Theology" at Yale, was critical of the more conservative "Old Calvinist" theology associated with the Hartford-based Theological Institute. Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. 5.75 x 9", sewn wraps, 84pp. Covers heavily foxed, soiling, corners creased, contents good. FIRST EDITION. This collection presents a sustained, point by point defense of the Pastoral Union and its strategy in the Connecticut church wars. It compares New Haven theology with traditional Calvinist views and places a spotlight on what the author sees as misunderstandings, motives, and doctrinal stakes in the early 1800s. The text blends correspondence, excerpts from trustee letters, and responses to public questions, offering a window into religious debates that shaped congregational life. Ideal for readers of religious history, early American theology, and readers seeking a firsthand look at how clergy discussed and disputed church authority and doctrine in Connecticut.

This book is a historical address delivered at the First Centennial Celebration of the Church of Christ North Coventry, Connecticut in 1845. The author, a pastor of the church, offers a detailed account of the church's founding and subsequent development within the broader context of religious history in New England. The author discusses the arrival of the first settlers and the establishment of the church in 1745. He then traces the church's growth, focusing on significant events such as revivals and the construction of a new meetinghouse. The author also provides biographical sketches of the church's pastors and explores the challenges faced by the congregation over the years, including doctrinal disputes and divisions within the community. The book sheds light on the role of religion in shaping the history of a New England town and offers insights into the beliefs and practices of early American Christianity. Taylor and his fellow New Haven Divines promoted theological ideas that strayed from the established Calvinist doctrines that had long been the foundation of Congregationalist and Presbyterian denominations. A group of ministers, known as the Pastoral Union, formed in opposition to these new teachings, believing they threatened the core beliefs of their faith. The author argues that the differences between these two theological factions were more than philosophical musings, but rather amounted to a fundamental challenge to the traditional understanding of God's sovereignty, the nature of humanity, and the role of sin in human existence. Ultimately, these disagreements would have profound implications for the unity and stability of the Christian churches in America.
