Vernonia amygdalina is a locally available phytomedicinal shrub with wound healing activity. The objectives of the research work were to review wounds, and Vernonia amygdalina, extract an active ingredient, formulate ointments with the extract, evaluate the wound healing property, and compare to a standard antibiotic. The wound healing effect was conducted using the excision wound healing model in Wistar rats. Different percentages of the extract were formulated. The result showed that the standard antibiotic was equipotent with 20 % ointment . There was a progressive decrease in the wound area with time in all the ointment signifying an efficiency of the formulation in the healing of a wound. Therefore, Vernonia amygdalina has intrinsic wound healing properties at any given concentration. 84 pp. Englisch.

Los objetivos del trabajo de investigación eran revisar las heridas y la Vernonia amygdalina, extraer un ingrediente activo, formular ungüentos con el extracto, evaluar la propiedad curativa de la herida y compararla con un antibiótico estándar. El efecto de cicatrización de heridas se llevó a cabo utilizando el modelo de cicatrización de heridas por escisión en ratas Wistar. Se formularon diferentes porcentajes del extracto. El resultado mostró que el antibiótico estándar era equipotente con el ungüento al 20 % . Se observó una disminución progresiva de la superficie de la herida con el tiempo en todas las pomadas, lo que indica la eficacia de la formulación en la cicatrización de la herida. Os objectivos do trabalho de investigação foram analisar feridas e Vernonia amygdalina, extrair um ingrediente ativo, formular pomadas com o extrato, avaliar a propriedade de cicatrização de feridas e comparar com um antibiótico padrão. O efeito de cicatrização de feridas foi efectuado utilizando o modelo de cicatrização de feridas por excisão em ratos Wistar. Foram formuladas diferentes percentagens do extrato. O resultado mostrou que o antibiótico padrão era equipotente com a pomada de 20%. Verificou-se uma diminuição progressiva da área da ferida com o tempo em todas as pomadas, o que significa uma eficiência da formulação na cicatrização de uma ferida.
