Leiss verfasste das Werk "Die optischen Instrumente der Firma R. August 1841 - Groningen, 16. Juli 1913) war ein deutsch-niederländischer Geologe, Paläontologe und Mineraloge. Er war Professor an der Universität Groningen. Biografie: Friedrich Julius Peter van Calker wurde am 29. August 1841 in Bonn geboren. Dort besuchte er das Gymnasium. Einer seiner Lehrer war Ferdinand Zirkel, der van Calkers Entscheidung, später Geologie zu studieren, beeinflusste. Nach dem Abitur begann er sein Studium. Er studierte an der Rheinischen Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität in Bonn und an einer Universität in Berlin. Er promovierte 1863 in Bonn mit seiner Dissertation De phaenomenis opticis, quae praebent crystalli sphati calcarii geminorum crystallorum ratione compositi vel polysynthetici". Diese Dissertation befasst sich mit Farbunterschieden, die bei Kalzitzwillingen bei Bestrahlung mit polarisiertem Licht auftreten. 1864 begann er eine Stelle als Assistent am Physikalischen Institut der Universität Leiden. Zudem war er als Dozent für Kristallographie tätig. 1866 wechselte er diese Stelle zu einer Dozentenstelle für Botanik, Zoologie und Chemie an der Hogeburgerschule in Tilburg. Später wechselte er an die Hogeburgerschule in Arnheim, wo er 1874 schließlich stellvertretender Direktor wurde. In dieser Zeit beschäftigte er sich unter anderem mit der Analyse von Trinkwasser. 1877 wurde er zum Professor für Kristallographie, Mineralogie, Geologie, Paläontologie und Physische Geographie in Groningen ernannt. Er nahm diese Stelle noch im selben Jahr mit seiner Vorlesung Der Zusammenhang der mineralogischen und geologischen Wissenschaften und ihre Entwicklung bis zur Gegenwart" an. Möglicherweise war er der Erste, der die Niederlande 1878 in einem Vortrag vor der Naturwissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft in Groningen auf die Land-Glazial-Theorie aufmerksam machte. (Die Ehre, der Erste zu sein, wurde auch Dr. H. Hartogh Heijs van Zouteveen zugeschrieben.) Beide stützten ihre Arbeit auf die Arbeiten von Otto Martin Torell, der 1875 vor der Deutschen Geologischen Gesellschaft einen Vortrag zu diesem Thema gehalten hatte. Als Professor war er für die Einführung eines neuen Lehrbuchs zur physikalischen Kristallographie verantwortlich. Damit trug er zur Reform der Geologieausbildung an der Universität Groningen bei. Er schaffte auch verschiedene Werkzeuge an, wie ein Zweikreis-Goniometer und einen Kristallschneider. Das Goniometer ermöglichte es ihm, die Kristallstruktur aller Arten von Gesteinen zu beschreiben.
