Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Scarce first edition of this uncommon collection of Southern dialect and regional poetry by educator, school administrator, and poet Marion Boyd Camak (1888-1962). Published in Columbia, South Carolina by The State Company in 1926, this volume captures rural Southern life through humorous vernacular verse, seasonal reflections, family sketches, religious themes, and nostalgic observations of early twentieth-century life. Camak was much more than a local poet. He served as superintendent of schools in Ware Shoals, South Carolina, was instrumental in developing the Ware Shoals school system, became known as one of South Carolina's leading educators, and was later inducted into the Ware Shoals Schools Hall of Fame. He was also a popular public speaker and syndicated columnist, giving this volume considerably greater historical interest than many self-published regional poetry collections. The author's self-deprecating foreword is particularly appealing, opening with the memorable declaration: "I cannot write a poem, I only can make a rhyme." He explains that he writes simply for pleasure rather than literary acclaim, giving the collection an engaging authenticity. The contents include approximately twenty-five poems such as: W'en Yer in Yer Stockin' Feet De Ole Campmeetin' Ground The Tom Cat Circus Day Grandpa Speaks Dry Weather The Path to Choose Beauty Many pieces preserve the rhythms and vocabulary of Southern rural speech, making the volume an interesting example of regional dialect literature during the 1920s. Literary studies of Southern local-color writing identify the collection as representative of the dialect tradition influenced by James Whitcomb Riley and other regional poets. Provenance Included is an original contemporary newspaper clipping announcing one of Marion Boyd Camak's public poetry readings before the North Carolina State Teachers Association in Raleigh. The article documents Camak's reputation as both an educator and public speaker and states that he would read selections from W'en Yer in Yer Stockin' Feet. This contemporary ephemera is directly related to the book and enhances its historical interest. Condition Very Good. Original green cloth remains bright and attractive with strong gilt lettering. Binding is square and sound. Spine remains tight. Minor rubbing to extremities and slight bumping at spine ends. Interior remarkably clean. Light scattered foxing consistent with age. No writing observed. No ownership markings observed. No loose pages. Newspaper clipping laid in. Overall an attractive, well-preserved copy. Historical Significance This volume represents an increasingly scarce category of Southern Americana: locally published poetry documenting everyday rural life between the First World War and the Great Depression. Rather than focusing on major historical events, Camak records ordinary experiences—children, seasons, church life, weather, farming, family, and community traditions—in the language of the rural South. As such, the book serves as a cultural document preserving speech patterns and regional customs that were rapidly disappearing during the twentieth century. Because of its limited regional publication and small probable print run, surviving copies are uncommon on the market. Copies accompanied by contemporary author-related ephemera are encountered even less frequently.…
