Paperback. Condizione: Good. A uniquely comprehensive and rich account of the Soviet intelligence services, Jonathan Haslam's Near and Distant Neighbors charts the labyrinthine story of Soviet intelligence from the October Revolution to the end of the Cold War. Previous histories have focused on the KGB, leaving military intelligence and the special service--which focused on codes and ciphers--lurking in the shadows. Drawing on previously neglected Russian sources, Haslam reveals how both were in fact crucial to the survival of the Soviet state. This was especially true after Stalin's death in 1953, as the Cold War heated up and dedicated Communist agents the regime had relied upon--Klaus Fuchs, the Rosenbergs, Donald Maclean--were betrayed. In the wake of these failures, Nikita Khrushchev and his successors discarded ideological recruitment in favor of blackmail and bribery. The tactical turn was so successful that we can draw only one conclusion: the West ultimately triumphed despite, not because of, the espionage war. In bringing to light the obscure inhabitants of an undercover intelligence world, Haslam offers a surprising and unprecedented portrayal of Soviet success that is not only fascinating but also essential to understanding Vladimir Putin's power today.…

Paperback. Condizione: Very Good. Despite various studies on the development of crusading thought, the First Crusade itself has not been properly examined from this perspective. Drawing on a range of European chronicles and charter collections, this book discusses the launching of the First Crusade, the practical experience of the crusaders and the interpretations placed upon this experience by contemporary commentators. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged. …

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition (NAP, SD). You can see the covers of the book in the photos. They are in excellent condition and exceptionally clean. The gilt lettering on the spine is nicely bright. The cover edges are free of wear, no rubbing. Same goes for the cover corners. The page edges very clean. The book is very solidly bound from cover to cover with nicely tight pages throughout and nicely tight covers as well. All the pages are exceptionally clean. I turned over every one of them without finding any instances of soiling. Twelve of the pages within the first two chapters do have lightly penciled underlining, none after that. I didn't find any creasing on any of the pages. There are no markings and no attachments of any kind. You can see the dust jacket in the first few photos. I have always had it in a fitted protective cover. The jacket is very clean. There is some toning on the spine. There's also a small tear there above the letter 'e' in the author's name. And there is a thin tear off the middle edge of the front cover. You can also see the little scuff on the 'K' on the front cover, and there's mild vertical rubbing along the edges of the spine. The flaps are in very nice condition, very clean. The bottom corner of the front flap is neatly clipped. However the price is present off the top edge of the front flap. From the dust jacket: 'This book is a critical exposition and evaluation of the idea contained in the first half of Kant's 'Critique of Pure Reason'. The author believes that we understand Kant only in proportion as we can say, clearly and in contemporary terms, what his problems were, which of them are still problems and what contribution Kant makes to their solution.'. Jacket design by Kenneth Farnhill; frontispiece by Saul Steinberg (illustratore). …

Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. Here is the thing nobody wants to say out loud: the war over Taiwan has already begun. The cables are being cut. The radar is being locked. The fishing boats are being rammed. Cognitive operations are running across hundreds of platforms in dozens of languages. There are no missiles yet. There is no declaration. But the infrastructure of conflict is already live - and has been for years. This book is not about a war that might happen. It is about a war that is already happening - in the only form that, for now, all parties have silently agreed to accept.Beijing does not need to declare war. It needs to move slowly enough that each action can be explained away: a patrol, a law enforcement action, a navigational error. Strategists call this salami slicing - the accumulation of small, defensible actions that, over time, fundamentally alter the balance of power. The world is not waiting for this war to begin. It is already inside it.What changes if you accept that? The definition. If war is understood - as both U.S. and Chinese military doctrine already define it - as sustained competition across economic, technological, informational, and military domains, then the conflict over Taiwan is not a future event. It is a present condition. The disagreement is not about what war is. It is about whether to say it out loud.Every chapter in this book examines one front of a conflict that has no name yet - because naming it would force decisions no one is ready to make.Inside the book: Why undersea cable disruptions, maritime confrontations, and airspace incursions may already constitute active conflictHow semiconductor dependency reshapes deterrence - and may be quietly changing the timeline of riskWhy alliances in the Pacific are driven as much by vulnerability as by shared interestsHow gray zone tactics allow sustained pressure without triggering traditional responsesWhat China is learning from global conflicts without directly entering themWhy a war that is never formally acknowledged may be the hardest kind to stopThis is not a prediction about what might happen next.It is an examination of what is already happening - and why it is so difficult to recognize while it unfolds. Paperback. Condizione: new. Paperback. The official story kept changing. The justifications shifted by the hour. And the consequences of the 2026 Middle East War were showing up in everyone's wallet.Jonathan Cambridge didn't set out to write a book - he set out to understand what wasn't adding up.What he found was a deeper system beneath the headlines: a web of fear-driven alliances, financial architecture built on petrodollar dominance, artificial intelligence shaping battlefield decisions, and a diplomatic breakthrough abandoned the day before the bombs fell. The Buddy System is not a polemic. It doesn't tell you what to think. It reconstructs the structural story behind the public narrative - drawing on reporting and analysis from institutions including RAND, CSIS, The Lancet, Chatham House, Amnesty International, and more - and lays out the evidence so you can reach your own conclusions.Inside the book: Why the petrodollar system may have made Iran's challenge to dollar dominance more dangerous than missilesHow China turned the conflict into a live-fire laboratory to study U.S. military capabilitiesThe $580 million in oil futures traded minutes before a market-moving presidential announcement - and why it went unexplainedWhat AI-assisted targeting actually looked like in practice, including its role in controversial strikesWhy this war may have accelerated nuclear proliferation instead of preventing itThe Buddy System is not a conspiracy theory. It is a documented account of how fear, alliances, and artificial intelligence converged into a consequential miscalculation of the modern era. This book is what happens when someone follows the question further than most people have the time - or the reason - to go.
