Danach arbeitete er ab 1923 als freier Schriftsteller in Berlin und am Steinhuder Meer . Er bezeichnete sich selbst als Vertreter der INNEREN EMIGRATION. Später Vizepräsidenten der Deutschen Akademie für Sprache und Dichtung in Darmstadt . Viele Literaturpreise, u.a. 1961: Großes Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste um die Republik Österreich (1952) , 1968 Hessische Goethe-Plakette , 1968 Konrad-Adenauer-Preis , 1975 Andreas-Gryphius-Preis der Künstlergilde Esslingen ) Die NOVELLE UM GOTT ist gestern feldmarschmässig verpackt an Velhagen einerseits und an Dußmann anderseits gegangen. Meine 7 Sachen, die nicht gerade Papier und Bleistift waren.Sie sind seit Wochen der erste, an den ich so schreibe. Nach Ansbach fahre ich erst im Sept. (dito : vorhanden sind ca. 25 weitere E.BRIEFE mit Ort, Datum, Unterschrift der gleichen Zeit an denselben in literarischen Belangen, Preis je Euro 65,-).
