Full leather boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. Head and tail of spine chipped, headbands remain intact. Gilt deco around boards' edges and in center are moderately scuffed and soiled. Spine label intact; gilt lettering soiled, but legible. Gilt deco in spine compartments overall attractive, normally dulled. Scuffing to raised cording. Front hinge cracked; front board attached via a couple pieces of cording - very fragile. Rear hinge beginning to split at head and tail; cording remains intact. Marbled end-papers dulled, but attractive. Gilt dentelles around paste-downs attractive. Normal toning throughout text-block; mostly at edges of leaves. Binding is intact; hinges cracked. Please see photos and ask questions, if any, before purchasing. Marcus Fabius Quintilianus (c. 35 c. 100 AD) was a notable teacher of rhetoric during the first century AD, counting Pliny the Younger as one of his pupils. His surviving work, the Institutio Oratoria, a practical guide to the art of public speaking, provides an excellent insight into education in the early-Roman Empire. The Institutio, describes how one ought to be taught rhetoric from being a baby through to adulthood. It covers all aspects of rhetoric, from grammar and the construction of speeches, through to providing guidelines on the correct dress and gestures. Claude Capperonnier (1671-1744) was a French classical scholar, and professor of Greek at the Collège de France (appointed in 1722). His works included this edition of Quintilian, published in 1725, and an edition of the Latin Rhetoricians, which was published posthumously in 1756. French Imprint.
