Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. 1st Edition. Beautiful set of Combermere`s scarce 2 volume biography based largely on letters to his family. Bound in later (20th century) wine half-calf and marbelled boards with new endpapers. 8vo. xviii, 837 pages. Portrait frontispiece in each volume. Plan. Some very light staining of the portrait in first volume, otherwise a remarkably clean smart set. As Stapleton Cotton the subject was in command of Wellington`s cavalry in the Peninsular War and it takes up much of the first volume. He also served in India and went back again as C-in-C, India, in 1825 and was asked by the Directors of the EIC to take the impregnable fortress of Bhurtpore that had defeated Lord Lake years earlier. The story goes that Wellington gave Combermere his orders by letter. "But", said Wellington`s secretary," I though you always said Lord Combermere was an idiot ?" "Yes", replied the Duke, "He is an idiot, and a damned idiot too, but he can take Bhurtpore !"Which he did ! ALL BOOKS ARE SENT AIRMAIL WITHIN 1-3 DAYS FROM OUR WAREHOUSE IN HUNGARY.
