Exceptionally uncommon first edition, second printing hardcover in bright royal blue paper covered boards with bumped spine ends and sharp tips. Some discoloration on covers (spine ends and gutters). Book has lively illustrated endpapers and one ownership book plate at head of title page, else no writing, soil or tears in the 235pp text with untrimmed edges. Illustrated with line drawn chapter headings, endpapers and five full page plates by Clinton Balmer. Original slate blue background dust jacket has a line drawn portrait of Jerry on frt panel (and book cover), has been repaired with coordinating paper at head of spine and a chip on frt panel. Rear panel is orange with other Century book offerings, with sunning and handling soil on rear gutter edge. Top inch of front flap was missing (now repaired) so no printed price by publisher but there is a round rubber stamp present in flap margin. Jacket displays very well in new mylar. Everybody in the army-post loved Jerry, the bright-faced little mutt with his clever brain and loyal heart who attached himself to Private Murphy - and won his stripes before Murphy did. The Colonel ordered the little fellow to be shot when he persisted in joining the army, but Jerry wasn't shot. He was made a corporal instead because of his distinguished services to Uncle Sam's army. The story of Corporal Jerry and how he won his way is irresistible. The author is an officer in the U.S. Army and a great lover of dogs. He writes of his four-footed hero with humor and affection.…
