Binding is worn, though all called for leaves are in place and firmly attached to one another. Covers are very worn, including a number of tears and general wear. Several repairs were made with clear tape to the "inside"… of the covers. Some tanning to pages. Volume is nicely illustrated with black and white photographs. This is an acceptable working copy, only Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Book.

The original black cloth is very good with a hint of rubbing at the bottom edge; gilt title on the spine and facsimile signature on upper board are bright. Top-edge blue. Pictorial endpapers and text are clean and free of markings. The original pictorial dust jacket is unclipped ($10) and shows some wear, with several chips at edges. [Please see my ten images of the actual book.] The book is filled with black-and-white photographs capturing the feeling of an extraordinary time. "During thirty years people swarmed round [Father Vianney's] pulpit and confessional. In the last year of his life, 'the number of pilgrims rose to over eighty thousand of those using public transport alone. A total estimate was a hundred to a hundred and twenty thousand'. . . . Some were there out of mere curiosity. But most were driven by the desire 'to see God in a man'. A century after his death, the pilgrims are still coming." (Page 12) As with every book from my father's collection, tipped-in at the front is the small, attractive, acid-free bookplate pictured on my homepage. Tiré à 160 ex., notre exemplaire numéroté sur grand vélin (n°31) avec… suite des lithographies avec remarques. Mondo 5301. Pierre Théron (1918 - 2001) artiste peintre, sculpteur, mosaïste, fresquiste, auteur nombreux cartons de tapisseries d'Aubusson français. Né à Nérac (Lot et Garonne) Pierre Théron fit ses études à l'école des Beaux-Arts de Bordeaux. En 1942, reçu premier en dessin au concours d'admission, il obtint une bourse de l'Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, et fréquenta les ateliers d'André Lhote et Jean Dupas. Puis il dut se réfugier dans le Tarn pour éviter le service du travail obligatoire en Allemagne. De retour à Paris dès la Libération, il participa dès 1945 à la vie artistique d'avant-garde de Saint-Germain-des-Prés, et se lia d'amitié avec Boris Vian, le chorégraphe Roland Petit ou les Frères Jacques. Au cours d'un voyage d'étude à Londres en 1947, il fit la connaissance de Marcel Aymé qui restera un ami fidèle et un admirateur de sa peinture. Dès 1945, l'Etat acheta deux toiles de Théron au Salon des Tuileries, et en 1950, l'artiste reçu sa première commande de décoration murale à Bordeaux. Il vécut de ses expositions et de commandes d'Etat abondantes et variées (fresques, mosaïques, vitraux, sculptures, nombreux cartons de tapisseries d'Aubusson). En 1957, il reçut, dans la catégorie Dessin, le Grand Prix des Beaux-Arts de la ville de Paris.

Avec 1 esquisse o…riginale, une suite des planches en noir avec remarques sur vélin d'Arches et 1 suite avec remarques sur Grand Vélin. Quelques frottements d'usage sur les angles de l'étui de l'emboîtage, chemise du même insolée. Dos de la chemise papier un peu insolé. Le papier cristal qui enveloppe les suites est déchiré par endroits. Bel état néanmoins et intérieur bien propre.
