This set of books defined not just how a generation of Americans saw Lincoln, but how they saw themselves. Sandburg collected a huge amount of information on Lincoln for this work, originally published in 1926 and 1939. The Prairie Years covers Lincoln's life up to 1861. The War Years were written over the next dozen years. Sandburg's interpretation is that of a poet, and his work is not intended as an academic biography. They are nonetheless beautifully written, poetic works. Sandburg was raised in the same milieu as Lincoln and that in itself helped Sandburg understand and present the Illinois Lincoln. Carl Sandburg's Abraham Lincoln: The Prairie Years & Abraham Lincoln: The War Years defined not just how a generation of Americans saw Lincoln, but how they saw themselves. Sandburg collected a huge amount of information on Lincoln for this work, originally published in 1926 and 1939. This Franklin Library edition was published two single-volume, condensed versions, one in 1978 and the other in 1981 as part of its leather-bound heirloom collections.
