Text is clean. 'For most readers and students of Canadian literature, Susanna Moodie's name evokes images of immigrant and settler experience in nineteenth-century Canada. Roughing It in the Bush, her account of pioneer life, is a landmark in Canadian literary history; it is the only sense of Moodie that most Canadians have. But there were many other dimensions to her life, as this volume reveals. It follows Susanna from her Suffolk girlhood and her experience as an aspiring young writer in London, through her emigration to Upper Canada and five decades of Canadian life. Many of the surviving letters, because they are written to fellow writers, editors, and publishers, are about literature. . . . Personal letters are here too. They tell a warmly human story of a lively personality.' SIGNED by the three Editors upon the title-page. 390 pages. Signed by Editors. Book.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. The search for a distinctive Canadian literature is not new. It began in the 1820s, and even then involved many of the same issues that concern critics today. Much of this early material is now inaccessible to most Canadians. Carl Ballstadt has selected for this volume a number of the most importance statements from a century of growth. The pieces come from essays, prefaces, and editorials published between 1823 and 1926 in a variety of works including the major literary periodicals of the time. Among the authors are Thomas D'Arcy McGee, Sara Jeannette Duncan, Daniel Wilson, Goldwin Smith, G. Mercer Adam, Pelham Edgar, J.D. Robins, J.D. Logan, and  Charles Mair. The major themes they treated, with frequent diversity of views, are the kind of writing best suited to a new country; the economic and spiritual barriers to the creation of literature; the feasibility of creating a 'national' literature; the need for serious criticism; the relationship between European traditions and the developing Canadian imagination; Canada's 'northern' character; the advantages of two cultural streams; and the significance of Canadian achievements in poetry. This book provides essential background to anyone concerned with the path Canadian literature followed to modern times.…

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. 437 pages. dj chipped & worn, name ffep, spine fadedThough her life was largely circumscribed by domesticity and poverty both in England and in Canada, Catharine Parr Traill's interests, experiences, and conta cts were broad and various. Her contribution to our knowledge of nineteenth-cent ury Canadian life from a literary, historical, social, and scientific perspectiv es was significant.Chosen from her nearly 500 extant letters, the 136 pre sented here vividly reflect typical aspects of social and family life, attachmen ts to the Old World, health and medical conditions, travel, religious faith and practice, the stresses of settlement in Upper Canada in the 1830s, and the dispe rsal of families with the opening up of the Canadian and the American West.Spanning seventy-two years, the letters are presented in three sections, each prefaced by an introductory essay. The first, 'The Changes and the Chances of a Settler's Life' (1827-59), traces Trail's story from her emergence as one of the literary Strickland sisters in England through the difficult, poverty-stricken years of settlement and family raising in Canada to her husband's death. The sec ond, 'The Poor Country Mouse' (1860-84), reveals her quiet life at Westove, her devotion to family and friends, and the time she spent writing botanical essays and seeking a publisher for them. A trip to Ottawa in 1884 awakened her to a rec ognition of the literary stature she had earned. The third section, 'The Sight o f Green Things Is Life to Me' (1885-99), begins with the publication of her Stud ies of Plant Life in Canada and sheds light on the public recognition she receiv ed, her continuing literary productivity, and the strengthening of her role as m atriarch of the Strickland family in Canada. It closes with her death on 29 Augu.…
