"Seit Anfang 1847 lebte er in St. Petersburg, wo er 1848 als Physiologe des Kaiserlichen Botanischen Gartens in den Staatsdienst eintrat. Nach dem Verlust dieses Postens 1855 wegen Stellenaufhebung war er 1856-87 als Experte für Naturwissenschaften und Mikroskopie am Medizinischen Departement des Innenministeriums mit gerichtlich-medizinischen, chemischen und mikroskopischen Untersuchungen beschäftigt; er verfaßte in dieser Zeit eine "Anleitung zur Untersuchung verdächtiger Flecke für Aerzte und Juristen" (russ. 1870, 1872, dt. 1871). Seit 1863 war er beratendes Mitglied des Medizinalrats des Innenministeriums, seit 1877 beständiges Mitglied im Medizinisch-gelehrten Komitee des Kriegsministeriums."
