Over the course of his career, his work evolves from clearly recognisable motifs towards the utter disintegration of figures. Especially his later paintings owe their power, as wel…l as their size, to his particular way of working: In a highly physical process, the artist would alternate between applying and removing paint, moulding matter with brushes and knives as well as with his hands and nails until his body merged with the work. The materialisation of Disler's physical thinking, a 'theatre of survival', places him in a fascinating dialogue with Ernst Ludwig Kirchner and the great expressionist's work. This new monograph, published in conjunction with an exhibition at Kirchner Museum Davos, focuses on the last decade of Disler's career and relates his output from the period to Kirchner's art, thus revealing similarities between the two artists. The essays explore the importance of the human body and its role in the artist's creative process as well as aspects such as movement and dance, gesture, expression, abstraction and figuration. Gaining early recognition primarily as a draftsman, he became an internationally celebrated painter after 1980. In the last decade of his relatively short life, which he spent in virtual seclusio…n, Disler also turned to sculpture. Throughout his entire career, he also wrote poems and literary texts. Self-taught in all disciplines, he constantly struggled in search of his unique visual language and for the major themes that connect his entire manifold oeuvre: love and sex, anger and tenderness, war and violence, illness and death. Regarded as a representative of a wild or neo-expressive style in painting at the peak of his career, Disler always remained an utterly independent loner. This monograph is the first book to examine the various disciplines in Disler's late work, highlighting the importance of the body and its role in the creative act.; Martin Disler (1949-1996) war in den 1980er-Jahren der wohl bekannteste junge Schweizer Künstler überhaupt. Zuerst vor allem als Zeichner beachtet, wurde er nach 1980 zum international gefeierten Maler. Seit seiner Jugend und bis zuletzt arbeitete er auch als Dichter und literarischer Autor. In allen Disziplinen war er Autodidakt, immer ringend um eine ganz eigene Bildsprache, aber auch um die ganz grossen Themen, die sein gesamtes vielfältiges Werk durchziehen: Liebe und Sex, Zorn und Zärtlichkeit ebenso wie Krieg und Gewalt, Krankheit und Tod. Galt er zur Zeit seiner grössten Erfolge als Vertreter einer wilden oder neo-expressiven Malerei, so war er doch immer ein gänzlich unabhängiger Einzelgänger. Diese Monografie widmet sich erstmals den verschiedenen Disziplinen in Dislers spätem Schaffen.
