"John Thomas and Lady J…ane: The Hitherto Unpublished Second Version of 'Lady Chatterley s Lover'" presents a gentler and more emotionally intimate reworking of the relationship between Connie and Mellors. Written in 1927, this was Lawrence s second of three versions of the novel. After completing "The First Lady Chatterley" (harsh, polemical, and political), Lawrence rewrote the story to focus more on tenderness, mutual understanding, and erotic connection, producing "John Thomas and Lady Jane." Still unsatisfied, he wrote a third and final version in 1928 "Lady Chatterley s Lover" which was privately printed in Florence and later became infamous for its obscenity trials. Lawrence s revisions reflect his ongoing struggle to portray physical love as a redemptive force in an increasingly mechanized and alienated world. Lawrence (1885 1930) challenged early 20th-century sexual and social taboos. This second version, long suppressed, was first published posthumously. The typescript for "John Thomas and Lady Jane" was discovered in Italy, where Lawrence had transcribed the novel into Italian. He did so not for literary purposes, but to satisfy Italian copyright deposit requirements and secure legal protection for the unpublished manuscript.
