Un segno di lettura al dorso, peraltro ottima copia -- Le ragioni storiche che hanno portato il maestro Benvenuto da Imola a farsi 'lettore degli antichi e dei moderni' sono da ricercare soprattutto in quella rinascita di interesse per la poesia - e per la cultura in generale - che caratterizza il primo Trecento, con un moto evidente di accelerazione verso la metà del secolo. Proprio in quegli anni Giovanni Boccaccio a Firenze scriveva che Dante nel suo poema aveva abbandonato il latino e scelto il volgare, perché aveva visto «li liberali studii del tutto abandonati, . e per questo e le divine opere di Virgilio e degli altri solenni poeti non solamente essere in poco pregio divenute, ma quasi da' più disprezzate» (Trattatello, I red.). Ma trent'anni più tardi, forte dell'esperienza di insegnamento a Bologna e a Ferrara, Benvenuto lanciava un ponte con i successi antichi di Virgilio e di Stazio, osservando che «hodie videmus multos avide concurrere ad audiendum libros istorum, si sit aliquis bene legens et inteligens» (Comentum, IV, 48). Quanto a Dante, al quale Petrarca stesso su sollecitazione di Boccaccio aveva riconosciuto «vulgaris eloquentie palmam» (Fam. XXI 15), Benvenuto nel suo inimitabile latino poteva constatare che la Comedìa «tempore meo non erat quasi in pretio, nunc non calumniam sibi [al poema!] imponi potest per aliquem, quantumcumque plurimi et plurimi conati fuerint sua velle dicta damnare» (cod. Laur. Ashb. 839). Nella storia, si sa, mutano i gusti e con essi la fortuna dei poeti e dei loro espositori. Dei commenti di Benvenuto ai classici, qualcuno attende ancora di uscire dall'oblio, altri hanno cominciato a farlo nel Convegno 1989 dì Imola di cui questo volume presenta gli Atti. Perfino il commento a Dante, padrone per un secolo nel campo umanistico, «fu spazzato via dal Comento del Landino» (G.C. Alessio), ritrovando solo nel secondo Ottocento, insieme al suo autore, l'alta considerazione che è dovuta ad entrambi. . Book.
