Die Beiträge verbinden die internationale, fächerübergreifende Diskussion aus den Bereichen Geschichte, Liturgiewissenschaft, Philologie, Kunst- und Musikgeschichte mit den Übergangsprozessen, Überlieferungssträngen und -brüchen zwischen Spätantike und Frühmittelalter. Der erste Teil des Bandes beginnt mit frühen Autoren, wie Gregor dem Großen, der die Exegese des Mittelalters entscheidend geprägt hat, auch schon Zeuge einer veränderten Welt ist, und Gregor von Tours, dessen exegetische Arbeit erst vor kurzem wiederentdeckt wurde. Im zweiten Teil des Bandes konzentrieren sich die Beiträge auf die liturgische Benutzung der Heiligen Schrift im engeren Sinn (Lesungen und Bibelauszüge in Messe, Gesang, Offizium), auf die biblischen bzw. liturgischen Hintergründe für das Verständnis liturgischer Objekte (Tragaltar) und die Ausstattung biblischer Bücher (Evangelien).
