Neue Wirtschaftsformen werden erprobt, das Alte wird teilweise rigoros beseitigt, im Zuge eines neu erwachten Nationalismus aber auch gepflegt und eigenständig weiterentwickelt.In dieser Situation haben sich vor gut drei Jahrzehnten in Tübingen Wissenschaftler verschiedenster Fachrichtungen zusammengetan, um einem immer stärker werdenden Informationsbedürfnis abzuhelfen. Konzentrierteste und vielseitigste Informationsquelle ist die Karte - so entstand der Gedanke, einen Atlas des Vorderen Orients zu konzipieren und seine Blätter aufgrund neuester Forschungsergebnisse und nach modernen kartographischen Gesichtspunkten zu gestalten. Sämtliche Karten des 'Tübinger Atlas des Vorderen Orients' sind inzwischen lieferbar.Vorderer Orient: Das ist hier der Gesamtbereich der Länder von der Türkei über Iran bis nach Afghanistan, Irak und die Golfstaaten, Jemen und Saudi-Arabien, Syrien, Libanon, Israel und Jordanien, Ägypten und der Sudan, in Einzelfällen auch nach Äthiopien und einigen Staaten des Maghreb. Der Atlas ist in zwei Teile gegliedert: Teil A ist der Geographie im weitesten Sinn gewidmet und enthält in zehn Kapiteln Karten zu Orohydrographie, Geologie und Geomorphologie, zu Klima, Vegetation und Tierwelt ebenso wie Blätter über Bevölkerung, Siedlung, Wirtschaft und Verkehr. Teil B ist der historischen Entwicklung des Gesamtraums gewidmet, wobei bewusst der Rahmen vom Paläolithikum bis zur Gegenwart sehr weit gespannt ist. Auch hier ist eine Gliederung in zehn Kapitel vorgenommen worden, die aber nicht thematisch, sondern chronologisch aufeinander folgen, die die großen Zäsuren der Geschichte des Vorderen Orients soweit möglich nachzeichnen. Die Vielfalt der Thematik und die gerade auf diesem Sektor prekäre Forschungslage erfordern eine differenzierte Darstellung. Wichtige Themen aus der gegenwärtigen wissenschaftlichen Diskussion werden dabei aufgegriffen und entsprechend dem neuesten Forschungsstand auf den Blättern verzeichnet. Je nach Thema sind dabei in die Karten die eigenen Forschungsergebnisse eingeflossen wie auch die Ergebnisse der internationalen wissenschaftlichen Arbeit kompilatorisch berücksichtigt. Es versteht sich von selbst, dass für Spezialthemen, für die sich besonders kompetente Wissenschaftler des Auslandes - auch der Länder des Vorderen Orients selbst - zur Verfügung stellten, deren Sachkompetenz genutzt wurde. Auch von diesen Kollegen sind Originalarbeiten im Atlas vertreten. Thematische Vielfalt ist dabei selbstverständlich: Probleme der Neolithisierung werden ebenso dargestellt wie einzelne charakteristische Erscheinungen der Domestikation der Haustiere, die ägyptische Expansion nach Nubien und den Sudan, die Verbreitung der altassyrischen Handelskolonien in Anatolien und die Topographie des Großreiches Davids. Die Präsenz von Griechen und Römern im Vorderen Orient findet ihren Niederschlag in zahlreichen Karten, auf denen nicht nur der Zug Alexanders des Großen in all seiner Ausdehnung und Verästelung gezeigt werden kann, sondern auch die Auseinandersetzung zwischen Griechen und Persern, Römern und Parthern, Römern und Sasaniden. Breiten Raum nehmen natürlich die Karten ein, die die islamische Eroberung zum Gegenstand haben, die danach die wechselvolle Geschichte der Reiche und Dynastie unter islamischer Vorherrschaft in Ägypten, Syrien, Mesopotamien, Kleinasien und Iran/Afghanistan darstellen. Hier wird der Bogen von der Situation beim Tode des Propheten Mohammed bis in die Gegenwart geschlagen.Bei der Darstellung.
