Una estrecha red de colaboración entre investigadores nacionales y extranjeros, expertos en gramática y variación de la lengua española, ha permitido cubrir lagunas importantes en el abordaje de los pretéritos perfectos y ofrecer datos concluyentes. Los avances giran en torno a tres aspectos: (a) ampliación de las zonas de análisis: regiones limítrofes con Portugal y Galicia, concretamente León, Extremadura y Galicia;(b) métodos: correspondencia entre usos y normas en el ámbito escolar y en la enseñanza de español como lengua extranjera, actitudes lingüísticas de hablantes en zonas de transición hacia otros sistemas, avances en la historia de la difusión dialectal de la forma compuesta; (c) datos: extraídos a partir de corpora ya existentes o creados ad hoc para la cuestión, pruebas de evocación y de traducción, cuestionarios cerrados y abiertos.
