Carney entered Honduras in 1983 as chaplain to a revolutionary group. The column was surrounded by the Honduran army; some were captured and later released; others were killed; and many (like Fr. Carney ) disappeared. His remains have never been found, and we do not know how he died or disappeared."To Be a Revolutionary is the explosive autobiography of an American~born Catholic priest~missing and presumed dead~who for twenty years has been a driving force for religious, social, and political change in Central America's poorest country, Honduras. Carney was one of the early organizers of the Basic Christian Communities which are revolutionizing the Catholic church in Central and Latin America. He was a nationally recognized leader in land reform, and helped develop over one hundred cooperatives. Written by candlelight in a small shack on the border between Nicaragua and Honduras, To Be a Revolutionary traces Carney's metamorphosis from all~American Catholic boy~athletic, middle~class, apolitical~through World War II veteran, factory worker, seminarian, to a Catholic priest fighting side by side with the poor in their struggle for human rights. Here is a full account of the journey that brought Carney to his first Honduran parish in 1964. Traveling by mule, horse, jeep, and foot, he ministered to the banana workers in the valleys, the landless campesinos on the hillsides, and the Indian tribes high in the mountains. Working with the eighty thousand campesinos of the national peasant union, ANACH, Carney spoke out against the U.S. exploitation, political corruption, and military cruelty that perpetuated the economic slavery of the poor. To Be a Revolutionary also reveals the convictions and process that led Carney to the activism embodied in his form of "liberation theology," which called for a Christian revolution in all levels of life (economic, social, political, cultural, and religious). His growing conviction that spirituality must be combined with social justice brought death threats, imprisonment, and exile. Yet, even as he became more enmeshed in the powerful battles to liberate the campesinos from their poverty, he always considered himself a Christian revolutionary, whose activism and courage grew out of his profound faith in the church and its teachings. To Be a Revolutionary defines his view of the essence of Christianity and the obligations he felt it placed upon his life choices. To Be a Revolutionary shares the author's feelings about the failure of North American Catholics to move beyond "self~centeredness" toward a life in 'service to others." He confronts the often uneasy alliance between Marxism and Christianity forged out of necessity~and the agonizin. Signed by Author(s).
