Initially working in the tradition of Dutch landscape painting of the late 19t…h century, Symbolism and Cubism subsequently took on great significance for him. It was not until the early 1920s that the artist focused on a wholly non-representational pictorial vocabulary, limited to the rectangular arrangement of black lines with surfaces in white and the primary colors blue, red and yellow. In separate chapters, this path is traced through motifs such as windmills, dunes, and the sea, farms reflected in the water, and plants in various forms of abstraction.

La cosa alla quale non siamo soliti pensare è che in ognuno di questi sguardi, in ognuno di questi nasi, è nascosto un frammento della nostra cultura e della nostra storia. Caro Verbeek racconta il nostro rapporto millenario con la parte che più di ogni altra sta letteralmente sotto ai nostri occhi, e le molteplici maniere che abbiamo inventato per raffigurarla, connotarla, esaltarla o metterla in ridicolo: dal naso aquilino di Cleopatra, esagerato nelle rappresentazioni per emulare quello dei potenti sovrani maschi, a quello storto di Michelangelo, conseguenza di un pugno ben assestato e causa della sua ossessione estetica per i nasi fini; dall'asportazione del ponte nasale di Federico da Montefeltro alla gobba di Napoleone, fino al naso «impossibile» di Barbie, ancora oggi un ideale raggiungibile solo ricorrendo alla chirurgia plastica.
