In her 2000 book Bring Down the Walls: Lebanon's Postwar Challenge, Dagher discusses the aftermath of the sixteen-year-old Lebanese civil war and how it affected the area's Christian and Muslim communities. In addition to delineating the two groups' differences and commonalities, the author analyzes how the late Pope John Paul II helped the two groups reach some common ground and how the surrounding countries of Syria, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq impacted the relationship and the Israeli-Arab peace process. Robert Brenton Betts, writing in Middle East Policy, commented: "The âpost-war challenge' in her title refers to the necessity for the Maronites to come to terms with their new diminished role and for the majority Muslim population to learn how to use its new, stronger voice in governmentâ"both in the executive and in parliamentâ"to maximum effect."
