Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. 47 pp, 1 leaf + Reprint in Facsimile, 91-98, 1 leaf. Original 1/2-leather and green paper boards. Leather corners of covers worn. Bookplate of Samuel W. Lambert. Very Good. First Edition. SIGNED BY HARVEY CUSHING to Samuel Lambert: "For Samuel W. Lambert/ with the regards of/ Harvey Cushing/ P.B.B.H. Jan 24 1926" (see photo). P.B.B.H. was the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston where Cushing worked. A fine association for several reasons. Both Lambert and Cushing were "Yalies", graduating from Yale in 1880 and 1891 respectively. Both were ardent bibliophiles with an interest in early anatomy, especially the work of Andreas Vesalius. In the early 1930s Lambert was instrumental in the rediscovery in Munich of the woodblocks that had been used in the original printing of Vesalius's Fabrica. Lambert raised the money that led to the Bremer Presse edition in 1934, Icones Anatomicae, of Vesalius's anatomical illustrations, using these rediscovered woodblocks. Cushing's A Bio-bibliography of Andreas Vesalius was published posthumously in 1943. Cushing's "Introduction" to this facsimile reprint of Canano is on pp. 7-12. Cushing Bibliography no. 243. Garrison-Morton 373 (citing 1st ed., 1541): "Contains copper-plates of the bones and muscles of the upper limbs, from drawings by Girolamo da Carpi, which 'in realism and exactitude surpassed anything between Leonardo and Vesalius; but having seen the woodcuts of [Vesalius's] Fabrica, the high-minded Ferrarese deliberately suppressed his own book, and only 11 copies are now extant' (A.C. Klebs). The first book in which each muscle was illustrated separately. This fine work was reprinted in facsimile in Florence, 1925, edited by Harvey Cushing and E. C. Streeter [offered here]." Monumenta Medica Vol. IV. Offered with: Prospectus for this book. 4 leaves. The Prospectus states there were two bindings available: half linen (12 shillings or $3 or 15 Swiss francs) and half leather (14 shillings 6 pence or $3.75 or 18 Swiss francs). I can send a photo of the Prospectus, upon request. ABE allows only five photos, so I did not have a place for the Prospectus. Signed by Author(s). …
