Jahrhunderts. Der widersprüchliche Lebensweg seines langjährigen Inhabers Karl Dietz (1890-1964) darf als exemplarische deutsche B…iographie dieser Zeit gelten. Gegründet 1919, löste der Verlag sich bald von der Wandervogelbewegung, aus der er hervorgegangen war, und wandte sich der modernen Belletristik und der Sexualaufklärung zu. Nachdem Dietz den Geschäftsbetrieb 1930 aus wirtschaftlichen Gründen einstellen musste, versuchte er sich wenig später den Nationalsozialisten anzudienen, die ihn jedoch abwiesen. Nach dem Krieg entwarf er von sich das Bild eines aktiven Gegners der Hitler-Diktatur. Seinen 1945 mit sowjetischer Lizenz wiedererrichteten Verlag führte er trotz aller Schwierigkeiten als Privatunternehmen. Nach Dietz Tod und der anschließenden Verstaatlichung 1964 spezialisierte sich der Greifenverlag auf Kriminalromane, Sciencefiction und Regionalia. Die Versuche, kritische Bücher zu publizieren, führten immer wieder zu heftigen Auseinandersetzungen mit den Zensurbehörden. Am Ende der bewegten Verlagsgeschichte standen die Privatisierung im vereinten Deutschland und ihr spektakuläres Scheitern 1993. Die auf einer minutiösen Auswertung der Quellen basierende Darstellung der Verlagsgeschichte wird durch eine Bibliographie sämtlicher Publikationen des Verlages ergänzt. Die intensive Erschließung der Titel bis hin zu den Illustratoren sowie Vor- und Nachwortautoren macht das Buch zu einem unentbehrlichen Nachschlagewerk für den Buchhistoriker.
