On the abdication of Otto, King of Greece, in 1862, the crown was offered to Prince Alfred, but the British government did not agree to the proposal. In 1865 he was created the Duke of Edinburgh and Earl of Ulster. . In 1874 he married the Grand Duchess Marie Alexandrovna, only surviving daughter of Alexander II, Emperor of Russia and was given the honorary rank of a captain in the Russian navy. Fond of music and an excellent violinist, Prince Alfred took a prominent part in establishing the Royal College of Music. An avid stamp collector, he was the first honorary president of the Royal Philatelic Society, and his collection became the basis for the royal collection. "Affie" (so called by his mother) was a committed naval officer and in 1893 was made Admiral of the Fleet. He died July 30, 1900 of a heart attack. In 1861 Prince Alfred spent five weeks in the Maritime Provinces, Newfoundland and Lower Canada. Photographic Image.

Da: Ken Sanders Rare Books, ABAA, Salt Lake City, UT, U.S.A.
Photograph. Condizione: Very Good +. Carte de visite. Albumen photograph [5.5 x 9.5 cm] mounted on a white card [6 x 10 cm] with a gold border on the front. Savage & Ottinger Fine Art Gallery backstamp (with beehive garden illustration). Faint pencil notation on the reverse. Two small stains also on the reverse (does not affect photograph, nor does it obscure the backstamp). The image is bright and clear, showing nice contrasts. A wide view looking down on the railroad tracks and bridge leading over the Weber River and into tunnel number three in Weber Canyon, UT. Several small building structures are visible to the right of the tunnel. A striking image from the renowned Mormon pioneer photographer, Charles Roscoe Savage, who is best known for his images of the linking of the transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. Savage was a prolific photographer of the American West in general, and of Utah and the Mormon experience in particular. He thoroughly documented the early settlement and development of Salt Lake City, including the long and arduous construction of the Mormon Temple over several decades. He also photographed many Indigenous North Americans, and is credited for taking the first photographs of what would later become Zion National Park.
